Joe Hutchinson, 14, of Kock Hill, S.C. received the 1973 Hartford Junior fire
Marshal Gold Medal, the nation’s highest award for juvenile fire heroism, at
opening ceremonies of the International Association of Fire Chiefs convention in
Baltimore. Given annually by the Hartford Insurance Group in Conjunction
with its Junior Fire Marshal Program, the award includes a $5,000 paid-up Hartford
Life Insurance Policy.

Last April 15 th, young
basketball when he noticed
flames shooting from he roof
of the home of John Every
McCoy, half a block away. Joe
raced to the burning house to
find that a man had already
tried to enter, but had been
turned back by the intense
heat.
Undaunted and unconcerned
for his own safety, the lad
charged inside, knocked a
board out of the way, moved a
dresser, and finally reached the
unconscious, 55-year-old
McCoy. “I had to drag him out
by the hand,” said Joe. “The
roof and walls were burning.”
A few days later, John McCoy
died.
The Gold Medal was
presented by Chief L.L.
Kenney of Miami, Fla.,
president of the International
Association of Fire Chiefs, who
praised Joe for “ignoring his
own safety for the sake of a
stranger.” John J. Butler, Jr.,
general manager for The
Hartford in Baltimore,
presented the paid-up $5,000
Hartford life insurance policy

The ground breaking
ceremony for Camelia Fashions
was held Nov. 10 in Thomson,
Georgia.
This will be a family store
It will not carry infants items.
Invesmo, Inc., who will own
Camelia Fashions is made up of
some ten men in McDuffie and
surrounding counties. These
men came together and polled
their resources for the purpose
of enhancing their present
financial lot and to get a part
to the young hero.
The highest award for
heroism given by The
Hartsford Insurance Group, the
God Medal is presented in
conjunction with the
company’s 27-year-old Junior
Fire Marshal public service
program of fire safety
education. Through JFM,
which annually reaches three
million youngsters throughout
the country, children learn the
principles of fire prevention
and fire safety, and are
recognized for performing acts
of heroism.
Joe was chosen to receive
the award from a field of six
finalists, all winners of 1973
Hartsford Junior Fire Marshal
Silver Medals, by a panel of
judges representing the fields
of the fire service, education,
safety, sports and
entertainment. Among those
selecting the winner were:
Howard Pyle, president of the
National Safety Council;
Donald M. O’Brien, general
manager of the I AFC; Dennis
Smith, New York City fireman
and author of the best-seller
Report from Engine Co. 82;
and Johnny Carson, Mary
Tyler Moore, Jim Nabors,
Willie Mays, Ted Williams, and
Abigail Van Buren.

High School in Rock Hill, Joe
participated in the Junior Fire
Marshal program as an
eight-year-old third grader. He

been named by Governor
Jimmy Carter as the State
Director and Coordinator of
the Georgia Anti-Litter
Campaign. This campaign is
co-sponsored by the Georgia
Conservancy and the Garden
Club of Georgia. The campaign
will be culminated by the
designated “Pitch in
Georgians” day on November 2
and 3. This will involve the
picking up of litter along all
highways and in all cities
throughout the 159 counties in
Georgia.
