GUYANA BECOMING SELF-SUFFICIENT —Dr.
Oliver M.R. Harper, right, Minister of Health of the
Republic of Guyana, told a media luncheon group
recently in Washington at the National Press Club that
his country aims to achieve a large measure of
self-sufficiency within the next few years. In addition to
increased food production, Guyana expects to have a
textile mill soon. Chatting with Minister Harper, right,
are William Raspberry, left, Washington Post columnist;
and Sherman Briscoe, executive director of the National
Newspaper Publishers Association.

NNPA Asks Public
Broadcasting For $6,500,
WASHINGTON, DC.—
The National Newspaper
Publishers Association(NNPA),
through its executive director,
Sherman Briscoe, asked the
Corporation for Public
Broadcasting last week for an
annual allotment of
$6,500,000 for Black Journal,
Soul, Black-oriented colleges,
civil rights, and service
organizations.
The request represents 10
times the amount now being
alloted to Black programing by
CPB out of its $65 million
budget.
Briscoe was among a half
dozen speakers who testified
before CPB in behalf of more
Black programming. Among
the others were: Rev. Jesse
Jackson, president of PUSH
(People United to Save
Humanity); Tony Brown, dean
of Howard University’s School
of communications and
producer of Black Journal; and
Remember when
only God
could end the world?
Today man has entered the atomic age, the age of
overkill. A mushroom cloud of death and violence
shadows the sensibility of our time. The awareness
however, that there is violence all around does not
diminish the fact that the starting point of non-vio
lence is the individual. We may concede that vio
lence is in all of us. So is God. The time is now to
try His way, together, on a scale never before
attempted. Get together with your family, friends,
neighbors, or co-workers to discuss the problems
of violence and how you can work together to help
solve them. For a helpful discussion guide and fur

the National Urban League.
Reverend Jackson pressed
for across-the-board
improvement in the
relationship of public
broadcasting with the Black
community. This includes
programming, employment and
upgrading of Blacks, and other
facets of station operations.
Dean Brown accused CPB of
failing to meet its commitment
to the Black community and of
being insensitive to its program
needs. He cited how Black
Journal has attempted to meet
these needs, only to be
penalized by CPB fund
reductions. He vigorously
demanded a restoration of cut
funds and an expansion of his
budget.
Williams reviewed the
longtime support of the Urban
League of increased Black

To hear Fred Williamson tell
it, he’s King Kong. “I’ve been
called a sexiest pig and an
egomanic. Great! Let 'em keep
calling me names,” says
Williamson.
On TV talk shows, he
puffs up larger than his 6’3”,
210 pounds. “But nobody falls
asleep when I’m doing my
thing. Nobody touches the
dial; they hang in there. And
you can bet they wouldn’t if I
suddenly came on as a nice,
sincere and humble guy.”
For Fred Williamson to
come on with humility would
necessitate a 360-degree turn.
He is cloaked, shrouded,
and commerical media. He
urged the allocation of more
funds for Black Journal, Soul
and other productions.
Briscoe told CPB directors
that NNPA member publishers
think it is appalling that they
would allot a mere
$650,000-a-year to Black
programming out of it $65
million budget. Then he asked
for $6,500,000 to be allocated
to Black Journal, Soul,
Black-oriented colleges to
promote higher education for
Black students, and to civil
rights organizations, and
service groups to present
programs which clarify their
own objectives and translate
the Black experience for the
television audience.
Last week for the first time
in its history, the CPB directors
opened their meeting to the
public for its views and
comments. About 40
organizations responded either
with verbal comments or
written statements.
INTRODUCING
NEWS IN
THE MOTHER
TONGUE
For Black people, the mother tongue is the
same all over the country. It’s the unique
way we have of expressing ourselves.
That's one of the reasons the National
Black Network saw the need for a
national Black news service
What do we call Black news? It's simply
news reported by Black people, edited
by Black people, and affecting the lives of
Black people.
That's the National Black Network—a vital
communications link between Black
communities everywhere.
It's a bet that when you listen.to an NBN
station, you'll know where it's coming from.
After all, it's carrying your news.

entombed in his image, and at
face or image value, he is so
externally boring that he
becomes an object of
increasing interest. He is like
the inscrutable East
something is suspected to be
hidden behind the borders.
Interviewed by Alan Ebert
in the November issue of
Essence magazine, Williamson
does his thing the only way he
seems to know how ... with
flair, and infuriating
self-confidence. Ebert describes
their first meeting. “From the
moment he opens the door he’s
on; his handshake is weak, or
perhaps disinterested is more
apropos. lie is cool (as opposed
to warm). Overtly, he is not
rude but subtly he is hostile in
his self-involvement and refusal
and/or inability to recognize
the presence of other human
beings.”
Ebert continues, “His
traveling companion is a Cybill
Shepherd-type and reminiscent
of his namesake movie, perhaps
he captured her atop the Watts
Tower. He introduces her
reluctantly and then dismisses
her abruptly, leaving Fred the
only beauty in the room. He
begins to explain that he is
producing his first film, “Boss
Nigger”, which he wrote and
will star in. He is also thinking
of directing it, and if it were
totally within the realm of
possibility for him to look
virginal, he would undoubtedly
don drag and play the school
marm. Such is his one-man
band desire.”
Fred was six when his father
skipped out of his hometown,
Gary, Indiana. He remembers,
“one day the old man just
wasn’t there anymore. I can’t
say I cared much. He left no
lasting impression on me one
way or another. I didn’t feel
much for him then and I don’t
feel much now.” When he was
13, his mother remarried and
he liked his stepfather. He also
admires his year-older brother,
Robert, whom he says “is an
international playboy. He lives
in Rome and has more money
than me. I don’t know what
he’s done to earn it; I don’t
think he’s worked one day in
his life.” Maybe it runs in the
family.
At Northwestern University,
he earned a BA in psychology
and a master’s in architectural
engineering but will not discuss
either. “I’m not big on the
benefits of education, and I
don’t think you necessarily
need it to make it.” Nor will he
discuss his I.Q. other than to
say that it is “big like all the
rest of me”. Last among things
not to be discussed is his age.
Sex objects, unlike wine, do
not mellow with age ... they
just get old; and who wants an
aging romeo?
The business of filmmaking
and being a star mean little to
Williamson he says. “I could
leave it tomorrow, just like it
did football.” After a decade in
the American Football League,
“One day it began to feel like
work instead of fun, so I quit.”
He looked around for a
business that would afford him
the same latitude ... “I’m no
nine-to-fiver; I need flexibility
in my life. After football, I
needed a job that would give
me as much money, as much
attention, and as much
freedom. Acting was it.”
Williamson claims he’s made
his pile in movies. “If I wanted
to pull out for Spain
tomorrow, I could. I can do
anything I want to do.” He has
a very simple philosophy about
himself and life; it begins with
M and ends with E.
On women, Williamson
comments, “they amuse me;
they’ve spoiled me, but that’s
only natural. You can’t blame
some gorgeous hunk of stuff
for wanting to be close to

DUO’S DEBUT: Noted actors micnaei Toian (left) and Brock Peters apparently are
pleased with their first movie production, FIVE ON THE BLACK HANt) SIDE, a
United Artists release which opens at New York City’s Broadway Cinerama and
86th Street Theatres October 24. The hilarious drama concerning problems facing a
Black middle class family, which could set a new trend in Black movies, star Clance
Taylor, Leonard Jackson, Virginia Capers, D’Urville Martin and Glynn Turman.
Charlie Russell, who wrote the screenplay, also created the off-Broadway hit
comedy presented by the American Place Theatre.

engagement in midtown with a
combined 11-day gross of

theatres, it was annouced by
James R. Velde, United Artists
Senior Vice President.
The UA Sales Chief pointed
out that the second week is
exceeding the first for the
another gorgeous hunk of
stuff. Women dig me; all
women. They view me as a
male sex object.” As to
preferences, he has none other
than they be tall and well-built.
“What difference does it
make,” he asks. “Color is
unimportant in a woman. It’s
the last thing I see. Right now
I’m with a white chick, but if I
meet a soul sister next, that’s
cool.” (“Next”, it has been
noticed, has been a long time
coming).
Despite his current status in
the film industry, Williamson
claims to dislike it.
“Hollywood is for losers. The
film business is dog-eat-dog.
Everyone lies and everyone is
afraid. Someday 1 want to be
as far away from Holloywood
as I can get and do something
new, somewhere new.” Will
there be a woman with him?
“There will always be a
woman,” he says. A wife?
“Maybe ... maybe someday
when I don’t think I’m a bad
marital risk. When I do marry,
it won’t be because I’ve fallen
madly in love but because 1
feel I can handle the
responsibility ... that I can be
honest and truthful, even
faithful.”
Somehow that just doesn’t
sound like “Fred Baby” ... but
then, even in the old-time
movie, “King Kong” turned
out to be a good guy, so who
knows maybe there’s still hope
for Fred.
