Bethlehem Center Pressed For Community Support
x x ""
Bp ? .
CHILDREN SHOWN IN VARIOUS ACTIVITIES OF THE CENTER
Part II Os A 111 Part Series
by Robert Lee Moore
Dr. Maurice Thompson,
chairman of the BCC program
committee,, said that over the
years people of the
surrounding community have
looked upon the center as a
sort of “Godfather” to solve all
their problems.. “ ‘Go to
Bethlehem Center thev would
say,’ ‘they will help you,’ and
down through the years BCC
has been meeting their
problems head on.” But the
chairman points out, that
because of economics, BCC is
no longer able to provide
overall assistance to the
growing community problems
without help.
Currently, the center is
operating on a total budget of
well over $200,000. It operates
the Comprehensive Child
Development Program for
which it received $30,000 from
the United Way and matching
funds in the amount of
$90,000 from the Department
of Human Resources ($3 for
every $1 contributed by the
United Way) and an additional *
$9,000 from a private source.
It also has received a direct
grant of $39,000 from the
CSRA Development and
Planning Commission for the
Senior Citizens Programs.
These funds are being used for
operating the Child
Development program and
Senior Citizens program only.
Verlyn Bell, executive
director for the center says the
real problem concerns the core
budget which includes
maintenance on buildings and
vehicles, utilities and salaries.
The core budget for this year
was $40,000 but the center
received only half the money it

Honorary
Membership
For Mrs. Tutt
One of the highlights of the
recent Women’s Day service
held at Christ United
Presbyterian Church was the
presentation to Mrs. John M.
(Rosa L.) Tutt of an honorary
membership in the United
Presbyterian Women’s
organization (UPW).
The award consisted of a
certificate and a pin in honor
of her many years of faithful,
dedicated and devoted service
as a member of UPW and as
secretary-treasurer of the local
Ellis-Harris Society, UPW.
Miss Louise Laney made the
presentation on behalf of the
local organization.
needed from the Augusta
community.
This year’s core budget is
$52,325. Os this amount
$24,000 will come from the
Board of the Global Ministeries
of the United Methodist
Church. The remaining
$28,325 is expected from the
community (churches,
fraternities and sororities,
alumni of BCC, civic groups,
via fund raising drives etc.)
“This money will be earmarked
for badly needed repairs on the
main building as well as the
gymnasium,” Bell said. In
addition, he pointed out that
the center is now expected to
provide services which it
cannot provide without the
money it takes and the spirit of
community and voluntarism
necessary for good
programming.

National Black Catholic
Clergy Caucus
Discussing the history and
future of Blacks in the Roman
Catholic Church, more than
100 Black priests and brothers,
as well as America’s three
Black auxiliary bishops -
Harold Perry, S.V.D.; Joseph
Howze, D’D.; and Eugene
Marina.S.S.j. - recently
gathered at St. Joseph’s Abbey
in Covington, La.
The event was the eitbth
annual conference of the
National Black Catholic Clergy
Caucus, which was considered
the “most positive that has
ever been held,” according to
Brother Joseph Davis,
executive director of the
National Office for Black
Catholics.
The three-day meeting
featured speeches by the
bishops and an opening address
by Lerone Bennett Jr., author
and senior editor of EBONY
In Memoriam
In memory of our son and brother, Mr. Larry Jones,
who departed this life four years ago Dec. 11,1971.
Death is just another step
Along life’s changing ways,
No more than just a gate away
To a new and better day,
And parting from our loved ones,
Is much easier to bear
When we know that they are waiting
For us to join them there.

Presenting an overview of
the Catholic Church’s Black
history, Bennett closed his
address pointing out that the
“Black population increase in
urban areas presents a
fundamental challenge to the
future of ail churches, and in
particular, the Catholic
Church.”
Reviewing the first 150
years of Black Americans’
participation in the Catholic
clergy, Bishop Perry noted that
America had produced only 10
Black priests during that time
period, due to a “policy of
‘non-encouragement’ of Black
vocations,” and that those
priests were achievers “against”
great-odds.”
Continuing the sojourn into
Black Catholic history, Bishop
Marino pointed out that, from
1930 to 1960, 112 Black
priests were ordained in
America. He also said that the
largest number of priests to be
ordained at one time was 12 in
1960. Two of the 12 priests
achieved the rank of auxiliary
bishop.
Tracing the history of Blacks
from 1960 to the present,
Bishop Howze credited Blacks
in the Catholic Church for
advancing the civil rights
movement, and noted the
development of a new clergy
which emerged in the 19605.
He defined it as a clergy which
“is better aware of the mission
it has to the social, spiritual
and economic development of
the oppressed community.”
In addition to making the
various speeches, the
conference elected a new
president, Fr. Joseph A.
Francis, to succeed Bishop
Howze. It also distributed a
book entitled the National
Black Clergy Caucus, edited by
Fr. George Clements, of
Chicago, who serves as
executive director of the
caucus.
Concluding the conference,
The Most Reverend Jean Jadot,
apostolic delegate to the U.S.,
delivered a Thanksgiving Mass
for the oldest Black priest in
the U.S., Fr. Norman Du
Kette, 85, of Lansing, Mich.,
and six other elderly Black
priests.
The mass was celebrated at
the Divine Word Siminary in
Bay St. Louis, Miss.
