The invention of that superior and complete
Sewing Machine (The Family Shuttle Machine),
mark? one of the mod important eras in the h=»-
torv of machinery, and when we consider its great
usefulness and extremely low price ($25), it is very
difficult to 'concefvo* of any invention fordomes-
tic use of more or even equal importance to fami
lies. It has great capacity for work; beautiful
smooth, aHd quiet movement, rapid execution, cer
tainty of operation, and delightful ease, that at

moment to sew stitches from an inch in length on
coarse material down to the finest, so infinitesimal
as to be hardly discernable with the naked eye,
and with a rapidity rendering it impossible to
count them as fast as made ; it does to perfection
all kinds of heavy, coarse, plain, fine, or fancy

A Fatal Accident.
During the first shower last Sat
urday morning the guards of the
squad of convicts who are raising
■ •re near this place took them into
an old simp close by till the rain
should cease. While waiting there,
the gun of one of the guards, Ranee
Ilillburn, was accidentally discharg
ed, killing him ns’anlly. He was
standing with the breech of the
gun resting upon an anvil when it
slipped off and in falling discharged
itself into his breast, with the result
as stated. The deceased was a cit
izen of Bartow connty, and had been
here for some months with his broth
ers in the service of Mr. N. S. Eaves.
He was buried at our town cemetery
Sunday morning. His relatives and
friends tire deeply shocked by his
sudden aud terrible death.
Beats Cotton.
We learn that George Hunt has
sold $135.00 worth of watermelons
from one acre of land and has had
plenty all the time for family use.
There are other crops than cotton
that will pay in this country and
people will find it out after awhile.
Escaped.
We learn that Jim Rowe made his
escape from the guards as they were
conveying him back to Atlanta to
jail. He Bprang from the car win
dow just after the train had crossed
the Chattahoochee riVer. The train
was stopped and the guards got off to
pnrsne him, but with what sttceess
we have not heard.

A Town Map.
We are informed that onr efficient
Connty Surveyor, J. C. Harris, is
making preparations to draft an ac
curate and full map of our grow
ing town.
Strange as it may seem, there is
at present no authentic map from
which purchasers or holders of town
property could define the location or
the limits of loti, and they are farced
to depend on the doubtful memory
of the “oldest inhabitant.”
Such vague and unpertain busi
ness transactions have already caused
some mistakes, and will, eveutnally,
involve opr citizens in mnch litiga
tion. We wish to encourage the
Surveyor in his work, and know that
onr City Fathers will show a proper

Advertising.
Docs advertising pay ? A few
weeks ago Mr. G. G. Potter spent
about eight or ten dollars in adver
tising his mills, He has since made
several thousand per cent, from the
investment. He has probably ground
more wheat this season than all the
other mills in the county combined.
Besides from all oyer Houston he has
had many wagon loads from Pulas
ki, D oly, and eyen Wilooxcount a;.
O.her business men of all kinds
who are too economical to advertise
their business properly are “saving
at the spigot and losing at the bung.”
Advertising in his local paper pays
the largest per centage of any in?
vestment a business man can make.
This applies to merchants, mechan
ics, mill men, and every other busi
ness. Ten to one hundred dollars
spent in advertising will pay from
one hundred to one thousand per
cent. Try systematic advertising.—

And were I, this instant, an ; angel, possessed
Of the joy aud the peace that are given the blest.
I would fling my white robes unrepiningly down.

And these are the questions I ask day and night:
Must-my lips tast hut once such exquisite delight ?
Would you care if your iffgust wore my shelter, as

And if you were here would you kiss me again ?
I KISSED YOU.
I kissed yon. I own it, but did not suppose
That you.jthrough the papers, the deed-would dis

I kissed you. The impniseas suddenly came
As that cold looking cloud ia transformed into

My act was the lightning that glances and thrills
And yours the loud thunder, that blahs to the

I kisesed you. As kisscll the poor Carian hoy.

And foolishly fancied—encircling your charms,

I kissed you. The zephyr on tiptoe went by.
The moon, with a kerchief cloud, hid her bright

With half smothered titter the katydid flew.
I kissed yon. All nature, in counterfeit sleep.
Half promised, onr secret, so sacred, to keep;
No ubiquitous press correspondent peeped

You had fainted, or else you would surely have

But I to repeat the performance refuse.
