Our Tr#4e Issue.
We intimated a few weeks ago that
we should this week issue a& extra
large trade edition of the Adverrti-
seb. Protracted and enforced absence
from our post has prevented ns ma
king the arrangements necessary for
Bach an issue. Besides, very little
interest was manifested in it by the
business men of the town and we
did not Lei able to shoulder ths
whole burden aloqe. The merchants
are all too busy to think or talk
about it. A live rushing place like
Cedartown don't need snch extra ef
forts for drawing trade, no how. She
is jnst going to boom right along; if
she don’t, why perhaps those inter
ested will request ns to do something,
and help ns at the job.
The Savannah News.
This deservedly famous southern
family paper will, on October 4th,
begin the publication of a new serial
story by a lady of that city. There
ii no better weekly family paper than
the News, and its original serials are
one of [its attractive features. See
the advertisement in another col-

It Is Ours, Gentlemen.
The Rome and Cartersville papers
are quarelling over the question as
to which of the two places will get
the increase of cotton traffic cansed
by the extension of the Cherokee
Railroad to this place. Meanwhile
the Cedartown merchant smiles
blandly away up in his sleeve. He
knows very well that while those fel
lows are growling over the boue Ce
dartown will just walk off with it
when the time comes.
The Staple.
There is no longer any doubt but
that the cotton crop will fall c nsid-
erably below what it promised one
msnth ago. At that time we seemed
aure of a crop at least 10 per cent
above the average; now it appears
certain that it cannot go higher than
10 per cent below an average crop.
It will take favorable weather for it
reach that point. The plant is large
and well limbed but the fruitage is
light

Slate Boots.
It has long been an admitted fact
that slate is the best of all material
for rxifs. If properly pnt on it is
aim - i-t indislructible. It will last as
lou ri as the bouse without cither
paint or repairs, unless damaged by
extraordinary usage or accident.
Heretofore i's high price has been a
bar to its general us-, but now, in
this vicinity at least, the cast is so
near that of the cheapest roof that
can be put on that t almost amounts
11 extravagance to use less durable
material. Messrs. Ellis Davis A Co. of
Rockmart are putting on slate roofs
in a most finished and subs antial
manner at prices approximating very
closely the cost of a good shingle
roof. Persons contemplating the
erection of either business houses or
residences would do well to consult
or correspond with these gentlemen
or. the subject before deciding up-rn
a roof.
The New Store
To be occupied by Mess. Barr 4
Leake is about completed, and they
will open next week—Monday or
Tuesday—and we would respectfully
suggest to the public that they call and
examine their stockjand prices before
going elsewhere to purchase. These
young men come to us from the
live city of Atlanta, and they come
well recommended for business pluck
and energy. They have spared no
pains in selecting their stock, and it
is their purpose to supply this com
munity with a better class of dry*
goods than is usually found in towns
of this size and thereby save the peo
ple the trouble and expense of going
or sending to other markets to get
fine goods. They will keep a splen
did line of Dry Goods, Notions,
Shoes, Hats, Clothing, Fancy Gro
ceries, Ac. They are also agents for
two large clothiug manufactory es
tablishments and will keep on hand
a full line of samples of all grades,
from the best imported goods, from
which you can Belect snch goods as
yon want and they will take yonr
measure and have the clothes made
to order, and guarantee a fit, and
have them here from ten days to
iwo weeks from the time your mea
sure is taken. ThU is a new feature
in our town and we hope that they
may receive a liberal share of pat
ronage, and meet with abundant suc
cess in their new enterprise.
The paragraph in last week’s
Advertiser, proposing that the ed
itor receive and forward funds any
one might see fit to contribute to the
orphans of Gen. Hood was without
our knowledge or consent. We think
a much better suggestion would be
for each to send his mite to the Con
stitution, Atlanta, Ga. That jour
nal is working up the matter with
commendable zeal find energy and
already has near two thousand dol
lars collected. Contributions sent
there are acknowdged in next day’s
paper. We will forward any dona
tions left with us, but suggest that
it would be better for each to seed
his own.
CAVE SPRING ITEMS.
Col. J. A. Green, formerly of this
place, now of Mill -dgeville, spent a
few days with ns last week. Left
Monday for Atlanta, being a mem
ber of the Legislature from Baldwin
county.
Parties in town every day inquir
ing for places to rent or buy.
Capt. Jackson Trout has bought
his town Jot back from Mr. Hoskiu-
son.
Mr. Green Cunningham lias
bought the place known as the L ike
house and farm, belonging to Mr.
Wm. Gibson, for $5,000 cash. We
regret very much to losse our friend,
but he has supplied his place with
one of Floyd’s best citizens.
Capt Corpnt, of Macon, Ga., who
has been spending the sumniei here
with his family, is now receiving
lumber preparatosy to bilding him a
very fine residence in this place.
Dr. Watts is still making brie t,
preparatory to putting up in this
plaoe a very fine brick building.
It is admirably healthy, so said by
the Doctors in Cave Spring. Dr
Watts employs his time in the brick
yard; Dr. Underwood saving clover;
Dr. Gray speculating in land, and
Dr. Culberson taking a rest, which
bis feeble constitution very much
needs.
The Deaf and Dumb Institute
opened last Monday under more fa-
vorabie prospects than usual. Forty
pupils present The number will
probably reach seventy in a short
time. We feel proud of the exellent
condition of everything connected
with the school.
Prof. P. J. King is bringing the
Hearn school up to what it merito
riously deserves. He has thirty-nine
yonng men and boys, with a pros
pect of an increase in a short time.
We think Prof. King has no supe
rior south or north ns a successful
instructor.
Miss Georgia Davis, who has charge
of the Baptist Female Academy, has
a fine school and is succeeding well
as an efficient and able instructor,
giving entire satisfaction to her pat
rons, so we Lave heard.
Miss Georgia Hight is teaching a
small select school.
Rev. J. W. Tullen, who is teaching
the Methodist school, has a large
school, bntwe do not know the ex
act number.
Mr,J. F. Colville won the gold
medal at Lome last Thursday. He
is a young man of no ordinary abil-
ty us an orator. We Lei a little proud
that oue of Prof. King’s pupilsshould
w in the prize, when his antagonist
was the champion of Rome—Bob
Toombs Wriglvt.
Mub Ella Bond has returned to
Cave Spring r.fter a long absence.
One of our young merchants has
been blushing and smiling ever since.
Miss Lizz e Dean, of Walnut
Gruve, Ala., is here on a visit to her
relatives.
Three of the members of the Leg
islature speut Sunday with us.
Cotton picking is progressing rap
idly, but the crop will be short.
Mr. Chas. Jones, of Cartersville
who has been spending some time
in our town with his sister, Mrs. R.
U. Tilly, has returned home.
Mr. H. Bitnn and daughter, of
South Georgia, are spending some
time with their relatives here. They
are looking well.
We were glad to meet Mr. Chap
Quillien in our town la3t Slonday.
He is looking well.
Cotton is coming in rapidly and
selling at 11£.

An Elegy on the Death of a Mad Dog.
Many will recognize this piece of
poetry. It is especially commended
to the sweetened lips of all who take
a fiendish delight in slandering their,
neighbors.
May the sad fate of the mad dog
deter many from following his ex
ample. Seay Kay-Ayteh.
Good people of every sort.
Give ear unto my song ;
And if yon find it wondrous short,
It cannot bold yon long.
In Islington there lived a man.
Of whom the world might say.
That still a goodly race he ran
Whene’er he went to pray.
A kind and gentle heart he had.
To comfort friends and foes ;
The naked every day he clad
When he pat on his clothes.
And in that town a dog was found.
As many degs there be
Doth mongrel, pappy, whelp, and hound.
And core of low degree,
Thia dog and man at first were friends.
Bat when a pique began,
The dog, to gain his private ends.
Went mad and bit the man.
Around from all the neighboring streets
The wandering neighbors ran.
And swore tho dog had lost his wits.
To bite to good a man.
The wound it seemed both sore and*sad;
To every Christian eye;
4nd while they swore the dog was mad
They swore the man wonld die.
Bnt soon a wonder came to light;
That showed the rognes they lied;
The man recovered of the bite,
The dog it was that died.
