I hereby announce myself a candidate
lor member ot the Legislature, and ask
your support and votes. If elected, I
will serve the people faithfully.
J. B. Ayers.
Sheriff.
To the Voters of Polk Count y:—I
have, for some time^ con tern plated en
tering the race for Sheriff of Polk
county. I have withheld a public an
nouncement for a settlement of the
question as to whether or not a white
primary-would be held for the selection
of county officers, being unable to buy
votes, and also opposed conscientiously
to vote buying, even if I were able to
buy them. That question being settled,
since nearly all the people of the county
who have expressed their wishes anil
opinions on the subject have pro
nounced in favor of a white primary,
and the Committee the people elected
to manage it have called for a white prL
mary to be held on August the 15th for
the selection of county officers, I feel
that there is an open field and a fair race
for all, whether rich or poor, upon their
merits and qualifications for office. I,
therefore, announce myself a candidate
for the oflice of Sheriff, subject to tlio
white primary on the date aboye men
tioned. If 1 am not Hie nominee of the
white voters of the county for that of
fice, I am for the man who is. If elected,
1 shall endeavor to sho\y_ my apprecia
tion of the confidence my ’fellow-citi
zens repose in me by making the best
officer in my power.” My Deputies will
be Messrs. T. C Hagan and W. A. Hack
ney. JVC. Knight.

I hereby announce myself a candidate

A SPLENDID BRIDGE
Built by ibe City Across Tanyard
Branch.
The city authorities last week com
"pleted a new bridge on Main street
across Tanyard Branch, to re-place
the old structure, which had become
unsafe.
The Street Committee^-Messrs. T.
F. Burbank, chairman, D. J. Lowry
and'B. A. Fite—have certainly dis
played excellent, judgment in this
much needed improvement. The
bridge is both wider and longer tnan
the old one, and the approaches have
been straightened. It is not only one
of the best bridges in this section
both as to material and workman'
ship, but is a marvel of cheapness,
The bridge is 20 feet wide and 128
feet long. It took J7,082 feet of lum
ber, at $170 82; carpenter work.
$58 38; hardware, $8.17; making a
total for the bridge complete of only
$237.37.
The work was done.under a con
tract advantageous to the city by the
E. &. W. bridge gang, in charge of
Mr. J. H. Cooper, a thoroughly ex
pert bridge-builder. Mr. Cooper says
that if rails were laid on this bridge,
it would be strong enough for a rail
road bridge.
The Street Committee are certainly
to he commended on their good judg
ment in the whole matter, and the
workmen are to be complimented on
the result of their labors.

Jars.
