The Jorge toque with turlmn effect
l:t still u great fuvorlte; somo of tho

diliicult to to decide whether toque or

on which ostrich plumes are generally
used. In this stylo, one of tho most
handsoipe' creations T have seen was
In show rooms on Oxford street. The
lint was In black velvet, and the crown
was Tam-shaped, in soft pleats. Tho
edges of both the crown and the brim,
which is four inches wide at the front
nnd sides, wore ornamented with snblo
about one inch wide. One hnndsomo
ostrich plume, twenty-eight Inches
long, Is fastened .under tho crown at
tho front, and Is , draped round tho
brim, failing over the edge nt tho Bide.
Another pretty hat of black velvet
lias the brim shaped on tho Mni r -
qu!«o order, with a soft beef-eater
crown, trimmed with a narrow band
of gold tinsel ribbon at the base, tied
in a how nt the right side. The brim
Is Hllghtly raised at tho left side, nud
to It !b fastened an ostrich plume, tho
tip of which Is decorated with short
hnekle feathers, fclylng a fringe effect.
This drops over the hair at tho hack.
.Tust nt tho present tho demand for
velvet hats Is tho feature of the trade,
and particularly so among tho west
end, nml 'the best * trade generally.
Thoro Is no doubt this will bo a big
velvot season, as, In addition to the
all-velvet bats, .it Is used so much In
conjunction with fur, which promises
to bo worn very largely for winter
hondgenr. Tho furs used principally
nro sable and mink, ermine, caracol
and chinchilla. In the latter I saw
an extremely pretty toque. Tho crown
was of gray velvet in folds, with tho
main fold carried up nt tho loft side,
about four Inches, In fan shape, with
a steel buckle holding the base In the
centro of tho crown. The brim was
of gray chinchilla, about two inches,
wide. On a grny velvet bnndenu,
over tho left brow, were two hunches
of Talma violets, with a knot nml ends
of velvot ribbon in tho snuie shade be
tween them.—Millinery Review.

.Tlie following extracts nro made

distinguished authority on tho subject
of peenn culture, prepared to he read
before the’ Texas Stato Horticultural
Society:
If It bo true that “Every man Is a
public benefactor who will cause two
blades of grass to grow where only
one grow before,” tho snrao Is appli
cable to that of plnntlng pecan groves
capable of earning millions of dollars.
True It Is, tlint no other branch of
arboriculture carries with It such
value ns this,- tho outlay nnd Income
not being equalled by any other Indus
try of such mngultudc.
It Is a common expression for men
of middle ago to say “I nin too old
to plant pecans,’’ Age has nothing
do with It, except' from a scHJsh stand
point.
Old men may plant pecan groves,
Why not? They aro securing tho bpno-

Says a man In Georgia, “I am sixty-

will ho a rich man In ten years, for
undor cultivation tho trees will begin

Like the olive, tho pecan tree Is of
long life nnd will hear ns long ns they
live. How long wo don’t know, hut
wo do know of nn old tree being killed
by lightning In Texas a few years ago,
when cut down Its rings showed it to
bo upwards of six hundred years old.
l>’or tho last fifteen years of Its life
the nnnunl yield averaged ten bushels
of lino pecans, netting a handsome in
come annually. Only In certain locali
ties can the olive he grown, but the
pecan, being of tho samo fnmlly of
the lilekory nml walnut will grow
where they do with profit.
Experience hns taught-that great ad
vantage was gained by cultivation,
closer plnntlng, low heading of tho
trees nnd planting them by tlio equi
lateral trlnnglo method by which they
get 123 trees to tho noro, planted 20
x20 feet apart, without crowding nnd
sixteen more trees than by the square
method, No greater Improvement lias
been mnde In tree plnntlng for rapid
growth of tho trees, not only while
young, hut during growth to their ma
turity, than tho use of dynamite.
At a cost of about twenty cents, a
charge of dynamite will pulverize the
ground to tho depth of eight feet .with
n diameter of four or five feet, giving
results obtained, by no other results
so cheaply.
Uncultivated trees do not make uni
form growth nnd aro unfavorably af
fected by drouth. Cultivated through
out tho season gives tho trees contin
ued vigorous growth: they nro health
ier, produce better fruit, nnd have a
greater uniformity of growth year af
ter year, as drouths lmvo no ill effects
upon them.. In n dry season the
groves nnd orchards should ho kept
In good tilth until tho crop of fruit
snd wood ure mature or'untll the rains
come.
During a wet season cultivation
should cense early enough for tho
;rowth to be checked so tho wood may
ripen for winter. Particularly Is this
true when the trees are loaded with
fruit.
Planted 20x20 feet apart with 123
trees to the acre, gives nn Increased
valuation of at least one hundred dol
lars per acre annually, for when the
trees are ten years old their earnings
nt ten per cent, upon each valuation
will make tho value exceeding one
thousand dollars per acre, with annual
increase for years to follow, and the
owner would he unwise to sell his
grove nt that price. A large nnnunl
Income from the samo ground can he
made by growing vegetables or other
low growing crops.
All conditions favor tho pocan. Is

ot such a grove when ten years old

The principal expense of the pecan
