The C. R. & S, road sustained

The north bound passenger
was in charge of Conductor Lee
Young, with Engineer Sam Ayers
at the throttle and Fireman B.D.

Rome, the engineer saw an open
switch only a few yards ahead
while his train was making nbout
80 miles an hour. Ho signaled
for brakes, reversed his engine
and turned on the air quicker

Mr. Richard Gammon died
Christman evening at 7 o’clock of
neuralgia of -the ’ heart at his
homo in Collard Valley about
seven miles from Oedartown. ,
He was seventy-five: years old,
and lmd been a man of robust
health all his life. Sunday night
lie was attacked by a violent spell
of nourajgin of the Stomach, the
malady spreading to his heart
Tuesday night, which hastened
the end. His death was a sur
prise to many of his friends.’the

lis illness until the announce
ment of his demise.

Mr. Gammon was Jfcrn in Enst
Tennessee, and traveled
drummer for a Cincinnati house
when a young man. It was on
one of his trips that ho met Miss
Mary Whatley, a granddaughter
of Gov. Lumpkin, whom he mar
ried about thirty years ago. Tho
family resided for a time in
Rome, and afterwards moved to
Oedartown whore he engaged in
tho clothing business. A disas
trous lire drove him out of busi
ness in 1881, and.Mr. Gammon
moved to his present homo place
in Collard Valley where he has
resided for nineteen years.
Three- children came to glad
den the home—Mrs. Addio Cor
nelius, Richard, Jr., and Miss
Susie Gammon, all of whom,
with tho devoted mother
wife, survive him.
Mr. Gammon was a clever man,
a good citizen, a splendid neigh
bor and a kind father nnd hus
band. He never joined any
church, but was a man of integ
rity and honesty. He believed
strongly in the gospel of honest
living and fair dealing, and was
scrupulously exact m all his
transactions and obligations
Funeral services will bo held
this morning at 10 o’clock at the
home in Collard Valley, con
ducted by Rev. O. K. Henderson
pastor of tho Oedartown Baptist
church, and tho remains will be
laid to rest in tho family burying
grounds on the old Whatley place
nonr his home. A number of rel
atives and friends from tlio city
will go out to attend the funeral.
