April 16th, w(» had a heavy i snow storm, covering the ground to j the depth of about two inches, fol lowed by freezing weather which con tinued four or five days, utterly de stroying all fruits,vegetables and field crops. I was then a boy eleven years old. Two things indelibly impressed that spell of weather upon my mind. One was, 1 was barefooted. My job was to do the chores around home night and morning, and then "hit the grit” to school nearly three miles distance. You know in those days boys under sixteen years old didn’t get but one pair of shoes a year. C»en- orally that pair came with Santa Claus and disappeared when they wore out, which was usually about the first of March. They were made by the neigh borhood shoe - maker, from home tanned leather. The fashionable shoe then was a hrogan. Another thing that impressed me with the weather was the fact that I seldom ever saw a biscuit. The wheat crop was killed by the freeze, and the farmer that didn’t have old wheat, lie and his had to do without until another crop was harvested. May 5th, 1865, a frost killed all the wheat In the mountain section of South Carolina. April 13th and 14th, 1869, there was a hard freeze, destroying tender veg etables and fruits. April 23d, 1871, a frost that was destructive to early vegetables and Injured the stands of cotton. May 4th, 1879, a frost damaged cot ton, fruits and tender vegetables. Dear Sir: We should like to ask your advice on a certain thing done: was it right or wrong? We shall have to state it, including the names. I). F. Dreicorn is a painter in Holy oke, Mass. John J. Donohue is an architect, Springfield, near-by. Donohue was building, at Holyoke, the Holy Family Institute, letting the work by bids, as usual. Dreicorn got the paint job; the paint was to be lead- und-oil. But Dreicorn said to himself: "lead- and-oll isn’t half so good as Devoe and it costs more money, what shall I do?” He painted Devoe; and, after the work was done,told Donohue, say ing: “if that isn't better than any lead-in-oil Job, i’ll make it so.” Was Dreicorn right or wrong In painting a lemt-nnd-oll job Devoe? You ask how it turned-out. This was six years ago. Now Donohue has another Job there, a big addition to the Catholic Hospital; and he doesn’t ask bids for the painting, but says to Dreicorn: “(Jo ahead Dreicorn and give in- ns good a job as you did on tin Institute.
