To the Superior Court of said County: The petition of the Piedmont Meth odist Institute, by and through its President, G. F. Venable, and Board of Trustees, to-wit: .1. S. Davitte, chairman, and others. respectfully shows to the court: 1st. That, at a regular meeting of the Board of Trustees of Piedmont Methodist institute, there being a quorum present, duly assembled for business, authorized and directed that the charter of the Piedmont Meth odist Institute be so ufhended as to authorize said Institute to borrow mon ey and secure same by a conveyance of its property or by creating a lien thereon, and for tlie purpose.of Recur ing any indebtedness that may be Incurred by and for the benefit of „sald Institute through its duly author ized agents and representatives, and for'this purpose appointed a commit tee to present to this court an appli cation for such an amendment to Us char tty*. 2d. The Piedmont Methodist Insti tute was incorporated by the Superior Court of said county on May 1.5th, 1890. 3d. Petitioners show that the Board of Trustees of Piedmont Methodist Institute have decided* that in order to successfully accomplish the work and to meet the demands made upon said Institute, it. is necessary to im prove and enlarge! present buildings, and to erect new buildings, and in order to do to, it will be necessary to supplement the donations and funds of the institute by borrowing, and in order to borrow money it is nec essary that said Institute be legally uiuhorlzt'd to execute and deliver all necessary contracts and conveyances, which will bind the Institute and its property for the payment of such loan or loans of nioneyjis it may deem neie.-sary and obtain for the use and for any purpose. Wherefore, petitioners pray that the charter of said Piedmont Metho dist Institute lie so amended as to authorize and empower said Institute, acting through Its Board of Trustees, to borrow such sum or sums of money as may be deemed advisable or nec essary for the purpose of enlarging and improving its present, buildings and for the erection of such'new build ings as said Board of Trustees may authorize at any time, and from time to time, and consider necessary and proper for the.successful operation and management of the affairs of said institute, and to bind the Insti tute and all its property, or any part thereof, by contract for the payment of its obligations. 'That said Institute* be authorized and empowered to issue bonds in such denominations, and for such an a- mount, and from time to time, as the Board of Trustees may consider necessary and for the best interest of the. Institute, and that the Trustees of said Institute have authority to negotiate, sell and dispose of said bonds as they qiay deem advisable and for the best * Interest of the Institute, and to do any other act facts or things, considered necessary to promote the work and best interests of said Insti tution, and not contrary to law. Wright Adanmon was the hospitable hostess Friday afternoon to the Fortnightly Club and n few other lady friends, and the gathering of that popular social organization was thoroughly enjoyable. They proved themselves a * clever lot of young gentlemen, but though older and larger than our boys, were con siderably outclassed- on the diamond, tbe score standing 7 r.o 1 in our favor. Mrs. Sarah Ann Dempsey, one of our venerable and estimable ladles, died Monday morning after a long illness at the home of her son, Sheriff .J. E. Dempsey, aged nearly seventy- five years. Four children survive her Messrs. J. W., J. L. and J. E. Demp sey and Mrs. J. T McElwee. Funeral services were conducted yesterday morning at Sanders burying-ground in the Seventeenth district.
