Polk Comity Man Writes Interestingly J of “Our Folks” at the National Capitol. Editors Standard:- As I have re eeived so many letters from relatives and friends in dear old Polk, desiring to know if Washington is as beautiful and great as it is pictured, with your kind indulgence 1 can reply to all of them at once with a short, letter that will interest many of your readers. 1. too, testify to this being the most beautiful city in the United States. 1 have traveled a great deal and been in many beautiful cities, and they cannot touch Washington, for Capitol Hill Is the most beaut iful place today in all the world, and 1 only wish all my dear old friends In Georgia could see it with their own eyes. The population is one of the finest in the world. The army wage-earners being mostly Government employees, they make the best showing of any class of employees to be found. One of the best advantages here is the fine schools, which are entirely sup ported by the Government. This a- lone will make many wish to be here, for it Is a hard task to get hooks for a large family, and it looked like they could use. more In Georgia than any place else. 1 just say to all -they will find everything they are looking for in Washington, except, a few of our Congressmen and Senators who have been worked to death for three months trying to make a record for themselves. lust here 1 want to say to my R. D. friends, they must thank Sen ator Clay for the handsome increase in salary, for he had it raised after it, ached the Senate Postofflce Com mittee. He is the highest Democrat on the cftimnlttee. The Senator was one of the few who voted not to raise bis own salary, showing that he was n honest true representative that the people could trust. No Senator com mands more respect or esteem than he, and only for his politics he would be in the Cabinet today, for our be loved president speaks in tile highest terms of him. He never lets wealth or fame lure him from his duty to his humblest constituents. He is as plain a citizen here ns he used to be when he plowed a mule all day and studied at night, down in Cobb county. I just want to sny that all the “boys” have done nobly—the Hon, Gordon Lee Is gaining all the time and watches the Seventh like a hawk, and before long he and Senator Clay will get a fine public building for Cedartown, giving employment, to mauy of her citizens. Felt Knight Is just the same clever Felt, and his good Job has not turned his head. He has lots of friends a- mong the Congressmen and Is one of the most popular messengers ou the floor of the House. Now last but by no means least, Will Harris. I want to ask my many relatives and host of friends never to go back on Will Harris for what he has done for me. Last June 1 ac cepted a laboring job at $3(55 per an num—not enough to live on, and by the hard work of Will Harris, 1 have been promoted twice and my salary is double. The working class are the ones he does not forsake, and that is what you need when you are holding an humble Government place. There fore, it Is a God-send to find a friend like Will Harris who knows the heads of all the Departments and the oldest members of Congress and the Senate. Col. Livingston said !f the people ever tried Will Harris they would keep him in office a long time, for he never saw a young man take so much interest in his constituents. If you ever get in a hard, tight place like me, you will remember this. Will Harris does not give advice but goes to work to help. He says 1 never be a candidate for any office. He and bis lovely wife have lots of friends here, as Mrs. Harris was widely known all over the Capital the daughter of that great General, Joe Wheeler, whom all lined and honored. I long to see those 1 love so dearly-- way down in the beautiful Valley that I love so well. We have never missed a copy of The Standard and hope we never shall. May this ;> ■ i l>e one of peace, plenty >:< i hi*p- pine.-s to everybody down in dear old Georgia. Your friend, O. B. WHATLEY. 700.E. St. Southeast, Washington, D. C. O. E.
