One seek# to have Federal aid given to the cause of good roadH In the various states of the Union, and the other urges Uncle Sam’s aid for the cause of education. Doth movements are praiseworthy,and both should succeed. The United States government spends millions of dollars annually in j ways which would prove vastly more beneftciul to our people if expended on education and road-bulldlng. The : millions expended on a single bat tle-ship would educate thousands of children. Wo want to see the time come when Cedartowu will have absolutely free public schools for all living within her corporate limits, at least through the primary and grammar grudes, and If it takes Federal aid for education to accomplish this, let us have It by all means. Wherever free schools have been established, they have brought people to the town and have proved a good Investment, and we believe such would be the result In Cedar- town. It Is worth thinking about any* how,and In the meantime the question of Federal aid for education and good roads should be persistently urged. Willis Evans, who married Miss Lillian Booz of this place, are pleased at his election last week as Mayor of Sandersville. Records of the United States treas ury department show that of all the immigrants that land in New York only four out of each hundred come to the Southern States. Governor-elect Hoke Smith returned last week from a trip, to Europe in the Interest of the new immigration movement for Georgia. He was suc cessful In securing the establishment of a direct steamship line to Savan nah, by which immigrants will come directly to this state, instead of “get ting lost” in New York on their way here. This direct steamer line Is the most effective possible way to bring immigrants to Georgia in large num bers, and Mr. Smith has accomplished a work of fur-reaching importance by his trip to Europe. Gee whiz! Up in Greenburg, Ind., the other day a negro committed the crime which has brought so much dis credit and retribution on his race. Failing to lynch the brute, an angry mob proceeded to attack every negro they could find. The authorities finally succeeded in quieting the rioters only by promising that they would at once drive from the city all negroes of questionable character. The dispatch, which was published in the Springfield (Ill.) News, a rank re publican paper, says it was “not the rougher element of white people who were in the mob, but the better class, who are enraged at the many crimes that have been charged to the negroes of late." They will visit the big JameHtown Exposition early next month, probably leaving here June 7th or 8tb la order to be at the Exposition on Georgia Day. June 10th. Capt. Trauick Is la receipt of the following letter from Col. Clifford An derson, Colonel of the Fifth Regi ment, which will be of Interest to the Rifles and their friends: — Atlanta, Ga.. May I ich. 190?. Capt. W. H. Trawlck: — My dear Captain: Replying to your letter of May 8th, I think there will be no difficulty in arranging for your Company to go direct from Cedartown, If the saving Is of sufficient Impor tance to you to make It an object, though I would much prefer to have the entire Regiment together to their entire destination, and of course If you should arrange for direct trans portation from Cedartowu to James town. the Regiment would pay the same ratio that they would pay If your Company joined us at Atlanta. Your understanding is correct that the men must furnish their own sub sistence. The officers and men will be ex pected to carry their full equipment with the exception of tents; the Ex position Company will furnish all the tentage.
