The City School Board met Friday to receive the announcement of Prof. J. E. Furks, the new Superintendent, as to the teachers select'd by him for the coming year,, and hls appoint ments were confirmed by the Board. Two of the excellent teacherH In the Grammar grade—Misses Willie Wood and Susie Gammon—were not appli cants for re-election, the former go ing to Hawklnsvllle and the lAtter to New York, and their places are to bo filled by Miss Cora Anthony of Jonesboro, and Miss Della Neal of Commerce, both of whom are experi enced teachers. In primary grades, Miss Louise Houses! did not apply for re-election, and her place Is filled by Miss Kate Young, who has had suc cessful experience In our county schools. The other teachers In the Grammar and Prlmnry grad<s who were applicants for re-election- Miss Adele Waddell, Mrs. Mary Janes, Miss Porcla Bunn and Miss Della Rus sell—are retained. All are good teach ers and the friends of the school are glad of their retention. Miss Rus sell, who has taught the First Grade for a number of years, received the compliment of an unsolicited offer to go to another city at a higher sal ary, but preferred to remain here at home. As previously announced, the pres ent efficient Principal of the High School, Prof. 8. J. Smith, Is retained by Prof. PurkB* and the position of Assistant Principal, vacatrd by the eloctlon of Prcf. E. E. King to a higher position In Atlanta, Is to be filled by Mrs. Eunice Winston, an exceptionally fine West Point teacher. Mr. E. W. Orebaugh was elected as Janitor. Prof. Purks, who Is himself one of the beHt school men In the state, has surrounded himself with a good fac ulty, pnd Cedartown will continue to ■have one of the best schools In Geor gia. Prof. L. K. Hall, ^or many years the efficient Principal of the Colored Schools, is retulned. • PRIMARY ELECTION. In accordance with action of the Democratic EcUtive Committee this day, notice is hereby given of a white primary to be held Saturday, July 20, to nominate a candidate to fill the vacancy in the office of County Treas urer caused by the death of the late W. Bass, of the United States Navy, has established a per manent recruiting office at 916V£ Mar ket St., Chattanooga, where he will be glad to furnish complete informa tion regarding the requirements for enlistment, pay, promotion, rewards, etc. Nearly twenty to one—1,>15 to 94, to be exact.—was the majority for prohibition in the election In Bartow county Thursday. And that Is about the proportion that will result in the state of Georgia whenever a vote Is taken on this vital issue. We congrat ulate the good people of Bartow on their victory. Agricultural Commissioner T. G. Hudson has appointed Atherton Sei dell, of Washington, D. C., to the position of State Chemist to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Dr. McCandlcss. Mr. Seidell is now connected with the agricultural de partment in Washington, and is a uat.Yc Georgian. BAND RE-ORGANIZED. The Baugh - Zimmerman Band Takes on New Life. A town without a good I ra h band nas something sadly lading. Cednr- town has found th.s out during the time her Baugh-ZImmei man Band -• once one of the best in the state- has Ji*en out of bu Iness. And everybody is g.ad to know thnt the organization is being revived, and that Cedartown will a*ain have a first-class ban! in the very near .n- ture. The rehalnlng members of the old organization met Thursday night and reorganized by electing Mr. Walter E. Good as president; Mr. Chas. Beas ley as secretary and treasurer; and Mr. Otis Burdette as business man ager. Mr. C. R. McGahey, the new sup erintendent of the city water and light plant, Is an excellent musician and enthusiastic band man, and has been elected as leader. There Is an abundance of good mus ical talent among the young men of Cedartown and vicinity to maintain a good band of twenty to twenty-five pieces, and that is what we are going to have. Our people should give the boys all the encouragement possible. Help their! along—it’s worth while! HIGN THE PETITIONS. The W. C. T. U. Is making a he roic effort to have the people of the various counties of Georgia sign a petition addressed to the members of the Senate and Legislature, urging them to vote for State Prohibition. They have sent copies of this petition to the Cedartown I nion, with an ear nest appeal to secure the signature of every citizen of Polk county If pos sible by the first week in July. The members of the Cedartown Union feel that it is impossible to do this work unaided In so short a time, and we earnestly seek the aid of all ttye read ers of The Standard. We will furnish two copies of this petition, one for our Representative and one for our Senator, to any person who will promise to try to secure signers to It. Copies can be had at The Standard office, or from our President, Mrs. C. K. Henderson. The work will have to be done promptly, as these peti tions will have to be sent to the State Department In the first week of July. In signing the petitions signify whether you are a voter or non-voter. A small niinibor of signers will be worse th*n none. A large majority of the voters of Polk would be glad to have State Prohibition. If the opportunity were given them to ex press their wishes, all the women will sign it. Coleman, of Cedar- towu Standard, who has been presi dent of the Press association for four teen years, refused to allow his name used for re-election and H. M. Stan ley, of the Dublin Courier-Dispatch, was elected In his place. Mr. Coleman loves thu association like a child, and is in return loved by the members. He .has guided it through many strug gling years until it has become large and prosperous.
