The truculent Japs can get out their spy glasses and look for a magnifi cent naval display headed in their di rection. Uncle Sam la seeding a fleet of sixteen battle ships, four protected cruisers and one gunboat to Pacific waters, under the command of "Fight ing Bob” Evans. Perhaps the Japs will be a little more pacific after they gaze on this flecty for a while. The Atlanta Georgian came out Sun day squarely and fairly for state pro hibition. As a general rule the city papers are against prohibition, and the country press is for it. The Stand ard is more than glad to welcome the great Georgian to the ranks of those who propose to have no "black spots" on the map of Georgia. Two members of the Georgia Sen ate are serving their first term ns public officials — Hons. William C. Martin of Dalton and Joseph W. Boyd of Dahlonega—but they will be heard from in the coming session. Both aj;e fine fellows, good lawyers and conservative men. The Farmers’ Union of Polk county met Friday at Rockmart,' there being a good attendance of, delegate** Col. J. 8. Davltte, of Aragon, was elected as a delegate to the District meeting which convenes In. Calhoun today. Messrs. J. I. Harris of Tay lorsville, Wni. Bradford and W. O. Cornelius of Cedartown. were elected as delegates to the State-, meeting In Atlanta. Friday, Aug. 9th, Is Hie date set for the county rally, to which Hon. R. F. Duckworth, the State President, will send some good speaker, Cedar town, Rockmart and .Fish all wanted this rally held with them, but the meeting decided upon Fish as the place on account of Its central loca tion. Then, too, the members of the Union remember with pleasure the good tinae they had with that hospita ble community last year. The warehouse project is progress ing nicely, good roomn having been rented from the Cedartown Cotton & Export Co. in Cedartown and from the Rockmart Warehouse Co. in Hock- mart. The selection of managers for these warehouses is postponed until the August meeting. TO ALL THE PEOPLE. My pastorute closes by limitation Jan. 1st, 1908. I shall then have served the Baptists about twelve years since my last, call to the church. That term of years ia enough. It equals the number of the twelve Apostles and is a Biblical figure besides. The Baptists have borne with me patiently, and 1 thank them for their Indulgence. They deserve a rest. I hope that everything will move on peaefully for the short time that I have to stay in Cedartown. Mean time, I shall do what I can to pro mote the spiritual Interest of the church. I have preferred the voice of the church to any initiative of my own. I have no doubt that a change will make for the interests of all. To all the people of Cedartown, I offer my good wishes. Lovvorn left Mouday for Athens with a good delegation of Polk county teachers, where the Teachers’ Institute for Polk Is being held this week.. In the party are Rev. G. E. Benedict, John W. Garner, aud Misses Callie Byrd, Bettle and Jennie Reynolds, Minnie and Odessa Hunt, Mamie and Ruth Garner, Annie Walker, Annie Dempsey, Ruth Lovvorn, Pearl Du- Pree, and Mrs. Frank West. Miss Annie Williamson is visiting her brother, Mr. Hugh Williamson,at Monroe. Mis-es Jennie and Corrie Morgan were In Atlanta last week. Mr. E. A. Morgan spent the Fourth In Cedartown. Mr. J. W. Brinsfleld 'and daughters, Misses Robu and Ruby, spent the Fourth in Rome. Little Mary Davidson is visiting her cousin, Miss Clara Belle Jolley, in Cedartown. The Georgia Legislature adjourned Wednesday until Monday, aud Hon. and Mrs. Felton Mundy were home from Atlanta during the recess. Rockmart has been entertaining the Methodist. District Conference this week. Rev. 8. B. Ledbetter, the Presiding Elder, has been In charge of Its sessions, all of which have been full of interest.. There Is a large attendance of clerical and lay delegates from all parts of the dis trict. Deputy Sheriff J. F. Carmichael has been attending oourt in Cedartown thi week. Will Darden killed another negro named Will Whitt last Sunday. Whitt was chasing Darden around the house with n pistol, when the latter darted in and secured a gun, with which he shot Whitt before he could fire on him. After Whitt was shot, he fired four times at Darden and then threw the pistol at him. Darden came to Ce dartown and surrendered to officers. Miss Sarah Wright, of Rockmart, was among the visitors to Rome yes terday.—Rome Tribune, 9th. Miss Ola Hilbburn, of Cedartown, spent Sunday here. Our*base ball team spent the Fourth at Piedmont, Ala., and came back with the score 9 to 2 against them. The Craig-Cowhain Band furnished music for t^e celebration there. Delayed Letter. Mr. I). H. Hubbard spent Saturday in the Gate City taking in the Hoke Smith inauguration. Mrs. J. D. M. Cummings and child ren, of Chattanooga, are visiting rel atives and friends in our town this week. Mr. F. M. Randall, a good citizen of Hamlet, was a welcome visitor here Monday. Miss Hattie Randall has returned from a pleasant /jsit among friends in the Hill City. Mr. John L. Moore, of Hamlet, was a welcome visitor in our burg Tues day. Mrs. W. H. Morgan visited relatives in Morgan Valiev the first of this week. The Court of Appeals have recently rendered two opinions affecting Polk county cases in which there is a gen eral interest. The verdict for dam ages for Mrs. J. E. Brooks against the city of Cedartown was set aside by that Court, and the motion for a new trial in the case Will Carter for the killing of Robert Read, for which he was convicted and sentenced to ten years in the penitentiary, was 1 denied by the higher court.
