Branch, who for one short week had charge of the editorial management of the paper during Mr. Stovall's absence in Mineral Well. Words shem inadequate to portray the sorrow that wa« onst over our little elty by the terrible tragedy and in sufficient to show the high esteem in which he was held, not only by the citizens of Sayre, but by every in habitant of the surrounding country with whom he was acquainted. Judge Branch was a favor ite in the community and always had a smile and pleasant word for every one with whom he came in contact, from the tcddling tot to the tottering and decrepit man or woman. Judge Branch has been a resident of Sayre ever since there was a town here, having located in this section before it was decided where the town- site was to be placed. He came here between nine and ten years ago from Cedartown, Ga., and entered t he em ployment of Mr. B. W. Watiws, who was an extensive cattle owner at th. t time, Four years ago he was elected Justice 6f the Peace for the city of Sayre, in the conduct of which office >ne was ever heard to make com plaint of any decision he ever ren dered, as they realized that even if the decision was against them, the verdict was in accordance wit h law and the evidencp.and the honesty of the court was never questioned. The .lodge was especially fond of the children of Sayre, and 'called nearly every one of them by name. It was no uncommon sight to see him sitting in frflnt of his office with two or three little ones on his lap and a half dozen others clustered about his chair. Many a little pillow was wet with tears on the night of that event ful day, Saturday, June 22d. Mr. B. VV. Waters, who probably was closer to the deceased than any other of our citizens, voices the senti ments and feelings of the entire com munity when he says : “Judge Branch was the most honorable man l have ever met. My sorrow could not be greater if a near and dear relative had been taken in his stead." The Journal, together with the citi zens of Sayfre and the surrounding country, deeply mourns the untimely end of .fudge Branch, and realizes that he occupied one small niche in this great universe which will be vacant for many a day. JAKK M UtTIN FIKKH THK FATAL SHOT. A Fourth of .Inly Tragedy Brings Death to One and Imprisonment to the Other. The pleasure of the "glorious Fourth" in Cedartown was marred by a homicide about 6.30 p. in. In East- view. Mr. George Cooper was shot down near the store of Mr. J. S. Moore, where lit* was employed, by his brother-in-law, Mr. Juke Martin. Martin is the husband of Cooper's sister, Mamie, but the couple had not been living together for a couple of montliB, and the tragedy grew out of this family trouble. It is reported that Martin luid been making ugly thrents of late against various mem bers of the Cooper family. Martin and Cooper entered into a discussion of the former’s treatment of his wife, and as u result, Martin drew Ills pistol and fired several shots at Cooper, three of them taking ef fect in his head and breast, killing him instantly. Coper drew a pistol when- Martin began to shoot, but there sems to be a difference of opinion ns to whether he fired it or not. Martin swore that no one should take his pistol from him after the commission of his crime, but Mr. A. Swann placed him under arrest and secured the weapon. He was ied over to the officers, and is now in the county jail awaiting trial. The remains of Mr. Cooper were ta ken to his home, and funeral services were conducted Friday afternoon by Rev. R. P. Tatum. The deceased was a son of Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Cooper, and was twenty- £even years of age. He was a young man well liked by all who knew him, and was about to open up u store of his own, the stock having already been purchased. He leaves a wife, nee Miss Jennie Sanford, and a bright lit tle six-year-old daughter to mourn his tragic death. Martin is a painter and paper-hang er by trade, and while known ns a drinking man, has never been gener ally regarded as a dangerous .char acter. ■Delayed Letter. LAKE CREEK NEWS. We are sorry to learn of the death of Ityr. Silas Brannon’s baby Saturday night. They have the heartfelt symp athy of all in their loss. Mr. R. L. Hogg was in your city on business Saturday. Mr. N. M. Caldwell gave Lindale a pleasant call Saturday. Mr. Jim Brown and wife visited Mrs. C. J. Stoke**nd son last Sunday. Miss Lcssic Smith', whose vehicle won the prize for the best decorated Fourth of July vehicle, is a popular and attractive young lady of Cedar- town. The shafts of the buggy and the harness were wrapped in white ribbon, with rosettes of red, white and blue ribbon scattered through both harness and lines. Miss Smith looked very dainty in her suit of white. She wore a sash of blue and red silk gloves, and carried a parasol of red,white and blue silk. She was es corted by Edgar B.
