There was a good turn-out at the ed ucational rally at Esom lllll last Hat urday, and It proved n most plea*ant and profitable occasion. was a matter or rugret that State 8chool Commissioner W. B. Merritt, who had expected to be pres ent, found It Impossible to attend, but the large gathering enjoyed the talks “home folk**'—and, as Commis sioner Lovvorn ways, It is our home folks who have to do the actual work In the Improvement of our local schools. Rev. Geo. K. Benedict made an earnest and practical talk In the fore noon, and then came the dinner. And such a dinner! There was enough of good things tt> eat to feed a crowd five times as large as the one which did ample justice to It Saturday .and 11 just couldn't be surpassed for quality. The good ladles of Esom Hill more than upheld their splendid reputation for hospitality on this occasion. The dinner was spread In tho pretty grove by the Methodist church, in which the exercises were held. After dinner Mr. M. V. It. Ake. the worthy chairman of the County School Board, read a thoughtful and excell ent paper In advocacy of local tax ation for public school purposes. Ed itor E. It. Russell, of The Standard, made a short tulk on educational mat ters, and Col. J. Mallory Hunt made a pithy and pointed speech that was much enjoyed. Col. J. E. Lovvorn, our popular County 8chool Commissioner, presided at the meeting, and contributed his quotai of good things for the enjoy ment and profit of the occasion. Altogether It was a day which the good people of Esom Hill and their guests alike enjoyed to the utmost. It is one of Polk's best and most pros perous communities, alive to the pres- ent day educational necessities, and Ye Editor can vouch for their open- handed hospitality. Fullwood Springs sent an invita tion for the educational rally next month, and It Is probable the Aug ust meeting will be held there. The Standard wishes to commend our County Commissioners and to congratulate the Esom lllll commu nity on the excellent road all the wav from Cedartown to that place. In spite of the heavy rain Friday night, the road was practically perfect. Hap py Is the country place which has good roads and good-schools. Esom Hill has the former, and she has long had an excellent school for the few months of the regular public school term. It is probable that the pro gressive i>eople of that section will be among the first in Polk county to take action In favor of a longer school term. ARAGON NE WS. Wllkerson died here Friday evening at 4 o’clock, and its remains were carried to the Fish Creek cemetery Saturday morning for luterment.
