At this meeting the Commission ers discussed building such a wall around the entire Court House grounds, and asked for estimates on both Jot>s. In 1864 a detach ment of Sherman's army went through Collard Valley, and camped In the grove at the old home place. The family were naturally alarm- ed.and hid everything possible. Among the articles hidden in the ceiling was a pair of fine shoes belonging to his mother. Mrs. B. T. West, which was wrapped in a couple of sheets. Af ter the soldiers went, everything was taken down but this package, which was overlooked.
