Hlance, we have Just had the pleasure of seeing an interesting reVic of nnte- bellum days-one of the first news papers ever published In Cedartown. The paper was sent the Major by his nephew, Mr. .?. T.West,now of Forrest City, Ark., who found It among the family heirlooms and sent It to his uncle as a reminder of old times. It Is a copy of the Republican Union, bearing date of Sept. 26th, 1S"m, and was edited by Messrs. M. A. Higgs and H. Fielder, the latter an uncle of our present Solicitor General, Hon. W. K. Fielder. “A family newspaper, devoted to polities, science, literature, education,commercial, agricultural, mw chanlcal, foreign news, etc.,” 1h the way It describes Itself, and It bears the motto, “The Rights of the States, und the Union of the States.” It Is a six-column folio—that Is to say,just half the size of the present Issue of The Standard. A hot political campaign was In progress between the Democrats and the Know Nothings, the paper being strongly against the latter. The same familiar headings, “Another Lie Re futed,” “That Trick,” etc, were In vogue then as now. The paper advo cated the following ticket: For Gov ernor, H. V. Johnson,jof Baldwin; for Congress,John H. Lumpkin,of Floyd; for Judge, Joseph E. Brown, of Chero kee; for Senator, J. M. Ware; for Rep resentative, E. A. Davis. As It was the last Issue before the olectlon, the paper contains little else besides pol itics and advertising matter. FIRST AND SIXTH GEORGIA. No town or city has ever done greater honor to the veterans of the 1st and 6th Ga. Cavalry than LaFayette and Walker county. There were four thousand people present, and all found a bountiful supply of barbecue and other good things to feast upon. La Fayette people shut up shop and did themselves honor by honoring the old veterans. At 2.30 p. m. the veterans met again for business, and were called to order by Dr. W. C. Dunn attended the reunion of the 1st and 6th Georgia Cavalry at Chlckamauga last week, and report a moat enjoyable time. They visited the famous battlefields, and were most hospitably entertain ed. Cedurtown will be glad to know that thp veterans accepted the invita tion extended by these gentlemen for be a pleasure for the Cedar City to entertain these valiant heroes of the CHAS.
