A FINK OPENING. V PUBLIC SCHOOLS STAItT WELL On the Nov Year’s Work— Tin* Larg est Attendance Ever Enjoyed. Cedartown is growing, and there Is no more positive proof of our rapid vth than the large Increase with each succeeding year in the attend ance at our city public schools. While each year has marked a substantial addition to the enrollment, the reg istration for 1907-8 starts out by far the largest in the history of Cedar town. This is most gratifying to every good citizen.and The Standard has hut one regret about it. The increase in our population has been mainly in Eastview, and we believe the people there are entitled to at least a primary school and that there should not have been so long delay in providing them ith it. This would have relieved the congestion at the present building,and ould have provided -much needed school facilities in the most rapidly grooving section in the city. It will be impossible now. of course, to secure this Improvement before another year, and we are glad to say that the Board of Education has temporary plans to relieve the present pressure. A pe tition has been put in the auditorium and enough primary desks have been ordered to seat two rooms. The Board wisely calls it poor economy f to have some of the rooms crowded as badly as they have been in the past, be lieving that what is saved in money to the tax-payers is thus lost to the child ren. The school not only starts out with the largest attendance but with the brightest prospects in its history. Prof. J. E. Purks, the new Superintendent, comes to us from West Point with a magnificent reputation as a success ful school ipan. He is a Christian gentleman of tact and culture, and is fully abreast, with the times in the most approved educational methods. Prof. Purks has the assistance of one of the best corps of Instructors in the state, their assignments for work being as follows:-— Principal of High School -Prof. S. J. Smith, of Acworth; Assistant— Mrs. Eunice Winston, of West Point. 7th and 8th Grades—Miss Cora An thony, of Jonesboro. 6th Grade—Miss Delia Neal, of Com merce. 6th Grade Miss Ade’.e Waddell 4th Grade—Mrs. Mary Janes. 3d Grade—Miss Kate Young. 2d Grade -Miss Porcla Bunn. 1st Grade—Miss Della Russell. It is a matter of regret that Miss A it bony was detained from coming on account of illness, but Miss Leah nora Bradford, one of our own talent ed young ladies, kindly consented to fill her place in charge of the 7th and 8th grades until she can be here. She hopes to be in her place next Mon day. The other new teachers are winning golden opinions in their work, and the remaining members of the old faculty are giving the same excellent service which has marked their course in the past. Our public schools are the most im portant investment Cedartown pos sesses, and everybody Is glad they are In such efficient hands for the coming year. We bespeak for Prof. Purks and his assistants the active and hearty co-operation of the parents of Cedar town.
