Dr. Edgar Everhart Completes Sur vey and Aaaay, Which Shows Great Forlune. Dr. Edgar Everhart, chemist for the geological survey of Georgia, and a recognized authority on'minerals, has Just completed a survey and assay of a hill of limestone and shale, near Rockmart, suitable for making the famous Portland cement, and upon h|A report the Industry In the South is about to be revolutionized. He states that the property In quo* tlon 1h closely contiguous to the Southern and directly on the Seaboard Air Line railroad, which will make the material easily marketed. The property In question covert bout eighty acres, and the quarry lo cated Is situated in a hill about 200 feet high by 900 wide and running buck for a distance of 1,500 feet. He states that a survey demonstrat ed the fact that the famous blue lime stone. which is so desirable for the manufacture of Portland cement, with an abundance of Shale, which is nec essary for Its composition, Is found ex fjosed in this hill above a cut In the railroad track for a distance of 75 feet and below this track to a depth of 25 feet. Dr. Everhart, from hi* laboratory on the third floor or the State Capitol, has assayed the specimens he secured from this vein, and states that 80 per cent of It is suitable for the manu facture of Portland cement,when prop erly mixed with shale. Using the dimensions of the hill In which this rich deposit Is found as a basis he hue worked It out that there Is hidden away In that little Georgia tually the same on all sides of the hill. The limestone is hard, fine-grained has a specific gravity of 2.7, is nearly free from magnesia, and is a first rate limestone for Portland cement. “The shale Is free from coarse quartz pebbles, and is of proper composition to make excellent cement. The prop erty has several excellent sites for the location of a plant and all within few yards of the raw material, fact, the location Is ideal in this re spect. Both the shale and limestone are not only of an excellent quality, but both are virtually in the qi quarry. The cost of quarrying and delivering the limestone to the crush ers is estimated at 20 cents a ton, and the shale should not cost more than half that sum “Furthermore, the vein is situated between Atlanta and Birmingham,th great centers of Industry and the distributing point* in the South.” Constitution. A Traveling Man’s Experience. “1 must tell you my experience on an Eakt bound O. R. & N. It. R. train from Pendleton to Le Grande, Ore.," writes Sam A. Garber, a well known traveling man. “I was in the smok ing department with some other traveling men when one of them went out into the coach and came back and said, ‘There is a woman sick un death in the car.’ I at once got upand went, found her very ill with ramp colic, her hands and arms were drawn up so you could not straighten them, and with a death like look on her face. Two or three ladles were working with her and giving her whiskey. Taking the 80 per cent needed for tho Portland products this volume la reduced to 108,000,000 cubic feet, and computing its density by 2.7 the solid weight is found to be 9,800,000 tons. . Everhart has computed that a single kiln will consume only 15,000 tons a year, and at this rate one kiln ian be fed,from this seemingly Inex haustible mine for a period of 000 years. It has been figured that one ton of the raw material will make three and a fraction barrels of Portland cement, and at this rule there is hidden away in this hill over 30,000,000 barrels, and at the standard price a barrel, a for tune great enough to pay the fine as sessed the Standard Oil company lies buried in a Georgia hill. (Borgia, always rich in minerals, with this Inexhaustible mine of mater ial just exposed and at a point which is so accessible to transportation fac ilities, will enter the market as a factor which has never before been ac counted. Dr. Everhart is not the only geological chemist who has been asktd sharpening gin saws for Mr. Hogg, to assuy this vein, and the others have Mr. O. O. Drummond is going (led. North Georgia has long been noted for her ocher and lime mines, but this is the richest mineral vein that has yet been found. With the present vogue of construct lug fire proof buildings, such as the Atlanta Terminal station, the Louis ville and Nashville freight terminals, the Washington street viaduct and other such structures from Portland cement in the ferro-comrete form,the great use to which this new find may be so easily placed is appreciated. A Capitol mathematician ha* com puted that using the figures furnished by the Geological Department and fig uring that there are 9,800,000 tons of Portland cement possible, at the low est calculation this hill alone will op erate a plant turning out 1,000 barrels a day for a period of over 100 years. Both with only a surface examina tion and geological estimate there is no telling how deep this rich vein reaches, for if there is one hundred feet exposed the deposit may run to a depth of hundreds feet more, and the surface Indication may be only a trace in comparision as to what is found underneath. With the opinion of an expert that this deposit if of the richest character there can be no doubt as to the wealth ahead for this state, in the mineral line. Dr. Everhart’s report on this assay concludes w.th the following para graphs: “Analysis were made on the dark blue limestone, and it was noticed tha mposltlon of the stone is vir- crutches while at Lake, as a result of scuffling with a friend.
