The favorite part of many an ac tress is a divorce. GRAND JURY PRESENTMENTS. State of Georgia, Polk County. September, 1907. The Grand Jury for the August Term resi ot tfully offer the following Pr< sentments: 1. We call the attention of our fel low citizens to a growing disregard of law In our county. The moral tone of the county seems to bo lower than it has been for a score of years. Not less than one dozen felony cases have been indicted by this body. Human life seems not to be denr in the Htghl of many. The whiakeyites and the pistol toter are In abundant evidence. There are cases of crimes and misde meanors in which the moral proof is clear, yet there is a lack of legal evidence. , There is a wide spread disregard of the Sabbath. A man under the cover of a frying pan and a fried sausage sets up a so-called restaurant and pro ceeds to sell the raw materials that are not necessary to the comfort and well-being of man. The spirit of gain on the Lord’s day disregards the law of decency and worship. We recom mend that the city and county officers be more positive in enforcing the law that forbids the selling of those things on Sunday that are not necessary. W believe that livery stubles have no more right to make gain and labor on the Sabbath day than the farmer or the merchant. Horses and vehi cles should not be let except in cases of mercy. Men need the rest of Sun day. We find that the finances of the county are In a sound condition. The roads of the county have been much improved and we believe our Commissioners are doing the best they can and have the interests of all at heart. We ask that the people will be patient, for we feel assured that every road will be put In order as fast us possible. We recommend that work be begun at once where a stream crosses the road in Collat’d Valley, and on ac count of an engorgenn nt under the bridge the watt r has been pouch d for the distance of six hundred yards a- bove the bridge. The water now does not pass under the bridge, and brush and logs are rifted against the bridge. This bridge Is near the old Whatley place on the Cartersvllle road. This work we regard as immediate. After a rain footmen cannot pass over this stream, and wagons have a difficulty in getting safely over the bridge. We find that there are several leaks In the roof of the Court House, which, If not looked after Immediately, will do much damage to the building. We recommend the Immediate repair of the roof. We also find that the jail Is too hii all for the amount of prisoners kep theiein, and as a jail is not for the punishment of the prisoner,but a place of safe keeping of the prisoner until he can have a trial, we therefore rec ommend that the jail be enlarged und provided with cots, closets, etc., so as to make it as comfortable as possible, .both for the prisoner and the jailer. We find that the juil Is kept as neat as possible under Its present condi tion. We also recommend that a new curb and shelter be placed over the well In the Jail yard. We find four Inmates at the Pauper Farm, three white and one black, all doing well and well satisfied with the fare. The negro is quite sick, sent from the ore bed there. We find thir teen acres in cotton and thirteen In corn and five acres In peas that will average with other crops on mine grude of land. We also find seven or eight gallons of old syrup,five bushels of old corn and fodder to feed until new fodder conies In. We also find one acre of very fine cane to be made up for the farm. The Superintendent informs us that he has deposited $33 in the bank for the county. We rec ommend that the Commissioners let the Superintendent haul the manure from the county stables to put on the farm, as he says he will do the haul ing free of charge. The Grand Jury recommend that the bounty Commitsionc rs proc* ed at once ,o erect coping of cement around the Court House and Confederate Mortu- m nt. all the ground included; that the contract be let to the lowest bid der. and that the cost shall not ex ceed $500.
