Wo recommend that our Senator and Representative, each in I heir re spective office, introduce a bill in the General Assembly of Georgia to reg ulate the operation of automobiles, traction engines and such other ma chines that if operated on the public highways will endanger life and prop erty. In tho meantime, the County Commissioners to require all persons operating the aforesaid machines to execute a bond for damages to persons and property resulting from these ma chines. We recommend the appointment of J. R. Barber and M. O. Gulas as audit ing committee to examine and report on condition of County officers" books for the year 1907,to the Grand Jury of Spring Term of Court for 1908. We recommend that the report of audit ing committee be made a part of these General Presentments, and that de tailed statements be filed with the Clerk for future reference. CHAS. To the Honorable Grand Jury, Fall erm, 1907, of Polk County Superior Court: * Gentlemen: — The undersigned having been ap pointed by the Grand Jury of tho Spring session of said Court to ex amine tile books of tho County Offi cers and make report to you, beg to submit herewith tho following: TREASURER’S KOOKS: The books and accounts of W. B. ‘Reeves, former Treasurer, now de ceased, were audited by us up to tho day of his death,June 17th,1907, show ing a balance of $3,666.18, which we found correct. On the day following his death, J. C. Walker was ap pointed Treasurer for the term Inter vening between the death of Mr. Reeves and election and qualification of new Treasurer,June 17th, to August 2lBt, Inclusive; we audited the books of Mr. Walker and found that on the last named date he had a balance of $5,112.59, which should be the balance chargeable to the new Treasurer, Mr. Marchman. For the details of the receipts and disbursements of the two named, see attached statements marked “A” and "H" respectively. TAX COLLECTOR:— We audited and approved the books of Mr. W. A. Calhoun, Tax Collector to April 20th, 1907, and attach de- /ailed statement marked “C.” COUNTY SCHOOL COMMISSIONER: Owing to the method of accounting In this office, we were unable to check the statement submitted to the preceding Grand Jury, and have pre pared statements marked “D” and “E," covering status of apportion ment of Polk’s part of school funds shown in ”D” and covering his ceipts and disbursements lor the endar year 1906, shown in statement marked “E." both attached. Since the law requires all com- inirtiuoned officers who handle moneys to give bond and •■cur.ty in double the amount of funds bundled, we, the Giund Jury, ask that the county Com missioners shall comply with the law In this respect In the; matter of hand ling the commutation tax. Wo find that the work of keeping the accounts of the County Treasurer can he done with comparatively little labor. A number of competent book keepers are willing to do the work for $25 per mosath. The county has paid often $100 per month to the County Treasurer, and sometimes us much as $125 pirf month. SLnce the decease of W\ B. Reeves the county has paid $400 to his successor In the Treasurer's office for about two months service. Therefore, we, the Grand Jury, recommend that our Sen ator and Representative ask the next Legislature to so change the law that we can pay the Oaunty Treasurer a salary for his work. We recommend that this salary shall not exceed $500 a year. In conclusion, wo wish to soy to the Court, and our fellow citizens nival we have endeavored conscientiously and faithfully to discharge our oath, and therefore claim the support of all good persons In the performance of our work. We offer our thanks to tho Court, Solicitors and officers generally for their courtesies to the Grand Jury of the August Term of Court, 1907. Up- tan met with a serious accident last Thursday at the Grady mines. They were engaged In blasting, and did not wait long enough after "shooting a hole’’ before preparing for another blast. Fresh powder was put In before the hole had time to cool, and the re sult was a premature explosion from which t.hey narrowly escaped with their lives.
