Editor Standard:—For health, pleas ure and profit there is no business as delightful or profitable for a woman as the poultry business. But a woman to succeed must apply business prin ciples just as a man does to Ills busi ness. They must have such a love for their stock that they will not neglect to supply them with everything neces sary to their comfort. They must ad vertise their stock; must be prompt with their correspondence; must, be honest with their customers, always giving a little better value than their money's worth. But the most Impor tance tiling Is to buy good foundation stock, and study how to mate and breed them, 'there are a great many people who think It is a very small matter to mate and raise chlckons, hut to the one who has studied this subject there is a whole world of de lightful possibilities In mating to get tho best results. I started first in the poultry business with Barred Plymouth Rocks. They are splendid chickens, large, healthy and easy to raise. Hut they are hard to mate, to get the benutlful, even barring that is so necessary from a fancier’s standpoint, and in the hands of an inexperionccd breeder the result Is often a lot of culls. s I next invested In Brown Leghorns and Black Mlnorcas. The Mlnorcas are not as good layers as the Leg horns, but their eggs are the largest of any chicken eggs and they are ex tra good winter layers. The White Langshsns came next. They are very large and nre excel lent fowls, making a beautiful picture on the lawn, but they require more food than many other varieties. Four years ago I Invested in Single Cojhb Rhode island Reds, the utility breed of the twentieth century. To give you some Idea of how profitable the RcdB are, I will tell you of a little investment I made last rail, and I give every reader of this article a Codartown has had no boom, but we know of no place of its sire which has grown more rapidly during the pa^t two years than this self-same City of Cedars. The growth has been constant and has shown no signs of lagging, end we are glad to say the prospects are that the percentage of Increase will be greatly augmented. The organization of the Georgia Fire Insurance Co. by Mr. W. J. Harris means that a great deal of money will he brought here for Inveslnunt, and tho capital can easily he provided for many of the improvement.-: n** ded here. Cedartown has two of the best banks In the South—the Commercial and the Bank of Cedartown — but the advent of the new Farmers fk Mechanics Hank will add largely to our banking faci lities and '.ill help Cedurtown’s growth and Importance as a financial center. By the loth of January I had hntched off 64 chickens; we ate 4 at frying size, and raised to be grown 20 pullets and 20 cockerels. Several of those birds are worth $5, $10 and $20 each. At the lowest value of $2.50 each they are worth $100. 1 had hatched In March and April. 155. These birds have had good attention, and are showing up very fine, .and expect many $5 and $10 birds In the lot, but will estimate them at $2 each, or $230. Have 30 chicks hatched in June and July at $14. Have sold of eggs and cockerels, $26, making in young stock on hand and eggs and stock sold from this one pen $360. Yet we hoar people say that there is no money in chickens. I heard of some business men in the city of Rome saying, when some one told them of the investment 1 had made in buying five chickens, that they would never think of putting $60 in a few chickens. 1 challenge them to show where they have invested $60 that has paid as high a per cent of in crease in less than one year as the $60 3d.
