t i The Taylor County (Ga.) News, Friday, September 7, 1962 This I Believe BY HELEN KELLER-Writer I choose for my subject faith wrought into life, apart from creed or dogma. By faith I mean a vision of good one cher ishes and the enthusiasm that pushes one to seek its fulfill ment regardless of obstacles. Faith is a dynamic power that breaks the chain of routine and gives a new, fine turn to old commonplaces. Faith reinvig orates the will, enriches the af fections and awakens a sense of creativeness. 1 was a terrible blow to my faith when 1 learned that mil lions of my fellow creatures must labor all their days for food and shelter, bear the most crushing burdens and die with out having known the joy of liv ing. My security vanished for ever, and 1 have never regain ed the radiant belief of my young years that earth is a happy home and hearth for the ma jority of mankind. But faith is a slate of mind. The believer is not soon disheartened. If he is turned out of his shelter, he builds up a house that the winks of the earth can not de stroy. When 1 think of the suffering and famine, and the continued slaughter of men, my spirit bleeds, but the thought comes to me that, like the little deaf, dumb and blind child I once was, mankind is growing out of the darkness of ignorance and hate into the light of a bright er day. SPONSORED BY EDWARDS' FUNERAL HOME BUILER, (.1 ORGIA DO YOU RUN YOUR HOUSE OR DOES IT RUN YOU? “Man works from sun to sun but woman’s work is never donel’’ Come now girls it’s a- bout time we did something a- bout the inference in this little rhyme. Man had elevated him self to the 40-hour week so the least we can do is obtain full control of the merry-go-round of housework. The very nature of housework makes it a never ending job, but we don’t have to let the work deep us in a time squeeze. The feeling of never being caught up with work can lead to a feeling of constant pres sure and this is no joking matter. If you have a feeling of panic because you have so much to do, it’s time to lake a long look at how you do your house keeping. A schedule of work is a tool for adding quiet efficiency to housework. It relieves nervous strain because it provides a sensible daily routine with DEAN THEATRE Butler, Ga. It will also allow planning for leisure time with the comforting feeling that your housework is not being neglect ed. Before setting up a schedule, examine what you are now do ing and when you are doing each job. Why do you “wash on Monday?” Is this the best time for you and your family or do you just do it because Monday has been wash day for generations? Sometimes we do things with out really thinking about why we do them. Keeping this in mind, start your schedule by making a list of jobs to be done--both the everyday regulars, the once-a- week jobs, and those you do seasonally. To arrive at a work able schedule, you may have to watch yourself operate for a while and time yourself to see how much time you really need for each job. Having listed all the work that must be done, space it out over the hours of the day with special jobs assigned to the days of the week. Develop a schedule that is tailored to your very own needs. A schedule should give you more perspective on your over all housekeeping problems. It may point up some ways that life can be simplified. This might involve some remodeling or buying a major piece of equipment or it might just be a management problem. What ever the adjustment, be sure it fills a real need and that you have thought it out in terms of your housekeeping life. Once you’ve made a schedule don’t let it become a rigid thing. Follow it comfortably if you can. If you can’t, revise it. Remember that life doesn't always happen the way you want it to. Don’t get upset on days when interruptions crop up— just readjust and deep calm. THE MAN FOR THE JOB! Paid political advertisement by Taylnr County Supporter! of Jimmy Bentley BY Bill Adams, Jr. Howard Methodist Charge the sin of a neutral mind "And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:2 The first time 1 drove our car into one of Atlanta's Minit Car-Wash stations, the Negro attendant greeted me with these instructions: “Roll up the win dows, take off the brakes, and leave the car in neutral.” Then he hooked a big chain to the front axle and a machine pulled the vehicle through the works and out the other side looking shiny and bright. It was several days later that I recalled those words and realized the car wash attendant had described perfectly one of the greatest temptations in our world today.. . . to go through life with a mind in nuetral. To have neutral mind may mean simply that whoever comes to us at the moment with the strongest and most attrac tive chain will have the pri vilege of carrying us along. Peter Marshall put it in one sentence in a prayer as the Senate chaplain: O Lord, help us to stand for something, lest we fall for everything. Another intelligent thinker was reported to have said that, we should cultivate an open mind. But, this person went on to warn, and open mind means being able to look with as much objectivity and as little pre judice as possible at the issues before making a decision. It does not mean blind acceptance time, by saying, “I believe in that,” when talking to those who believe in that, and by saying, “1 don’t believe in it," when in the presence of those who do not. What good is a world whose God is a popularity poll? What good is a personal conviction if it cannot be expressed with integrity? Of what practical value is the will of God which commands, “Thou shalt love,” if the cry from the crowd drowns it out? 1 believe the final revelation of God’s will is love. And 1 think that is the "something” for which to stand that Peter Marshall was praying about. The apostle Paul said we should permit the will of God to trans form us, rather than allow ing ourselves to squeezed in to society’s mold. This, said Paul, comes through the renew ing of our minds. To live in Christ, and to let him live in us, is to have the mind that was in Christ. In its simplest terms, this means to let our minds be ruled by the Spirit of Love. It is to let God be Love in us. CHURCH PAGE You will note the absence of the absence of the church di rectory from our paper this week. This contract expired last week. In a world where the pres sures of society are so strong, the easiest way to meet these demands is with a neutral mind. But the will of society is not necessarily synonymous with the will of God. God demands that we love one another. But there are many places in which our society is very specific about telling us which people we must not outwardly love. In some parts ol our country candidates seeking political of fice are able to win votes sim ply by letting the public know which people they love more. Social pressures are peculiar enough that a person can re main popular, at least for a Sparky says: If your clothing catchos fire, don't run . . . Roll on floor or ground . . . THIS BIO 200,000 BLOC VOTE It is now clear that a majority of white Georgians are going to vote for Marvin Griffin for governor; but this is a popular vote race, and a white majority does not guarantee Mr. Griffin’s election. There is another big force to be considered. That is the 200,000 Negro Bloc Vote. That vote will un doubtedly go to Carl Sanders who has sought it by every means at his command. He is willing to make it the balance of political power in Georgia—if he can. To get this Big Bloc Vote, controlled by Martin Luther King and his NAACP, a candidate has to promise, promise, promise, and then give, give, give! In Atlanta, the white majority voted for another candidate to be mayor, but The Big ■ Bloc Vote, added to a white minority, elected Allen. Since then, this Bloc Vote has demanded concessions out of all proportion to its numbers. In Macon, the white majority voted for another candidate, but The Big ■ Bloc Vote, added to a white minority, elected Wilson mayor. There, too, concessions have been demanded and received. Here’s how it happens. In every town, city, county and, yes, in the state, voters are divided into various factions. This is good, as each faction checks on the other. This is Democracy. It works when each side plays fair. It’s bad when the weak side wants to win so badly that it is willing to promise, give, concede and trade anything to get a bloc vote such as The Big ■ Bloc Vote controlled by King and his NAACP. When such a combination wins, chaos is the result. WHAT’S THE ANSWER It’s just this—the white factions must forget their differences at the town, city, county and state level. They must decide who best can protect the people of Georgia against domination by this Big ■ Bloc Vote and vote for the man who will be fair to every citizen, but will not be intimidated or coerced by or overly indebted to any bloc vote group. You can vote for Marvin Griffin and give everyone fair representation, or you can vote with the minority and risk turning the State of Georgia over to control by The Big ■ Bloc Vote which would be the balance of power. SEPTEMBER 12 IS THE DAY Georgia’s fate rests with you. The decision is yours. Talk this over with your friends, and let’s join together and all vote for MARVIN GRIFFIN This ad paid for oy friends of Marvin Griffin who believe in him and in the future of Georgia.
