Church Of God 39 Seniors Graduate At Taylor County
Slates Revival
The Rev. Darrell Honey of
Alpharetta will be guest
speaker for the revival services
this weekend at the Church of
God at Fickling Mill. The
services will be held Sunday,
June 9, at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m.
The Rev. Kenneth Angel is
pastor.
Purvis Reunion
Set For Sunday
At Mount Nebo
The annual Purvis reunion
will be held June 9 at the
Mount Nebo Primitive Baptist
Church near Charing with the
morning services to get
underway at 10:30 a. m. and a
basket lunch to follow.
Descendents of Marion and
Marzelian Purvis are urged to
be present for the day and
bring the entire family.

seniors at Taylor County High
School last Friday night in the
gymnatorium along with
special awards. Mrs. Barbara
Payne, class sponsor, assisted.

RICKY PRINCE
Mrs. Benny Waller of Charing,
was the valedictorian and gave
a challenging address to the
seniors. Ricky Prince, son of
Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Prince, was
salutatorian and welcomed the
parents and friends to the
exercises.
LaDoane Williams gave the
farewell address before the
seniors lighted their candles
and departed the stage by
candlelight. Merle Youngblood
sang “The Lord’s Prayer” as
the invocation.
LaDoane Williams was
awarded the Kiwanis Club’s
special Joiner Scholarship
which is named for Mr. E. H.
Joiner, long-time educator and
principal of Reynolds High
School. The award is based on
the scores on a test given to the
seniors. Don Kendrick won the
Huling Memorial Scholarship
presented by the Jaycees. Alan
Waller was presented the
Readers Digest award.
The seniors dedicated the
1968 Valhalla, the Taylor
County yearbook, to Annual
Sponsor Edward Benns.
LaDoane Williams was named
winner of the English and
journalism award, Alan Waller
was named for the science
award and Carol Windham won
the mathmetics award.
Don Kendrick was named
winner of the $500 Brainard
Huling Memorial Scholarship
given last Friday night at the
graduation exercises of Taylor
County High School in the
Gymnatorium. The award is
presented each year to the
senior that has shown the
greatest potential in ability
along with an attitude of desire
to learn and make a success in
life, and his need for help to
further his education.
The student is selected each
year by the Taylor County
Jaycees who award the
scholarship, along with Mrs.
Paulette Huling of Columbus,
mother of Mr. Huling. Mr.
Huling was a science teacher
and guidance counselor at the
high school for many years and
worked hard to make the
school one of the best in the
state.
The award was given to
Georgia Southwestern College
where Don will enter school in
the fall.
The 17 year old senior is the
son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard
Kendrick and a native of
Taylor County. He worked in
the Future Farmers of America
for four years where he served
as reporter, secretary and
treasurer, in the 4-H Club for
four years, was a member of
the Key Club and was tapped
for the Beta Club while a
freshman. He played for the
quartet at the Literary Meet
and represented the F. F. A. in
Public Speaking in the district
competition.

The special Senior activities
included Baccalaureate on May
26 and Class Night on May 27.

Commencement
At McDougald
The Bethlehem Primitive
Baptist Church Cemetery has a
trust fund set aside for the
cleaning of the cemetery.
However, the funds are low
and it is necessary for the
interested people to clean the
ceretery. Those having loved
ones buried there are asked to
meet at 8 a. m. on June 20 for
the purpose of cleaning the
grounds. Please come and bring
the necessary tools.
Forty-eight students
graduated from R. L.
McDougald High School, May
29, at 8:30 p.m. Principal
Charlie A. Hicks gave out the
diplomas and Miss Lillie
McCree presented the
candidates for diplomas.
Dr. John Albert Middleton,
president of Morris Brown
College in Atlanta, was the
featured speaker at the
commencement exercose.

In addition to the
graduation exercises, Student
Honor Day was held May 16,
as was the G. I. A. Banquet.
The Elementary Graduation
was on May 23 with the
Elementary Program on May 2.
Degree At Tift
graduate of Butler High
School.
After completing her
four-year program at the 118
year old college for women,
her plans now call for her
teaching the first grade at
Taylor County High
and Elementary School.
Turners Chapel
YBS Scheduled
The Vacation Bible School
will get underway -at the
Turner’s Chapel Freewill
Baptist Church on June 10,
continuing through June 14.
Classes will be held each day
from 9 a. m. to 12 noon with
the graduation services set for
Friday night at the church. The
children of the community are
invited to attend.
Mrs. Turner Gets
A native of Butler was
among the graduates receiving
diplomas from Tift College,
Sunday. Mrs. Rita P. Turner
was graduated with a bachelors
degree in Education.
The wife of William R.
Turner Sr. of Mauk, she is the
mother of Jerry Turner and
Mrs. Boyette Smith. She is a
Payne, son of Mrs. Eldridge Payne and the
late Mr. Payne was awarded the Oak Leaf
Cluster with the V device for Heroism in
Vietnam on March 3, while stationed there.
The award was given for “heroism while
participating in aerial flight. Specialist Payne
distinguished himself by exceptionally
valorous actions while serving as an air
ambulance aidman on a medical evacuation
helicopter, evacuating wounded
personnel .. . .volunteered to attempt the
evacuation, despite the fact that gun ships
were not available. To land in the area, the
aircraft had to hover under the jungle
canopy. Specialist Payne positioned himself
in the doorway of the aircraft, exposing
himself to the enemy, and gave directions to
becoming entangled in trees and thick
underbrush. Once on the ground, Specialist
Payne quickly exited the aircraft and began
loading patients aboard ... .resumed his
position . . . .and again furnished the pilots
with directions, enabling them to depart the
area safely. Once airborne, he rendered
emergency first aid to the
wounded . . . .unhesitatingly volunteered to
return to the tiny landing zone four more
times .,.. .heroic action were in keeping with
the highest traditions of the military service
and reflect great credit upon himself, the
unit and the United States Army.” Payne is
a Taylor County native and lived in the
county until he enlisted in the Army as a
Medic in 1960.
Revival Planned
At Howard Church
Dedication of new Howard
Methodist Church furnishings,
pews and central
air-conditioning and heating
will be held Sunday, June 9,
1968 at 11 a.m. with a covered
dish dinner in the community
house following the service.
The revival will begin
Sunday morning June 9, at 11
a. m., continuing each night
through Friday at 8:30 p. m.
Dr. C. W. “Handy”
Hancock, District
Superintendent of the
Columbus District, will preside
at the dedication and preach
during the revival.
Taylor Youth Slain
In Vietnam Conflict
Johnny Carpenter, 23 year
old son of Mr. and Mrs.
Freeman Carpenter of Butler,
was killed in Vietnam last
Sunday while engaging in
ground warfare.
Carpenter was serving with
the United States Army and
had been in Southeast Asia
since March.
He attended Butler High
School. He was married to
Dorothy Short Carpenter also
of Butler.
He will be flown back to
Butler next week for burial.
Reynolds Elementary
Holds Commencement
Principal Harold Helms
awarded certificates to the
members of the Eighth Grade
at Reynolds School last Friday
in special exercises in the
auditorium. There were 27
students in the class receiving
the awards.
Jean Jones, a member of the
eighth grade, daughter of Mr.
and Mrs. Roy Jones, was
presented a trophy from the
Woodmen of the World for
being selected as the
outstanding student in
American History this year.
Stevie Aultman, Marijo
Goodroe, Billy Bell, Bunny
Fuller, Stan Montgomery and
Jean Jones were given special
Certificates of Educational
Development for scoring in the
top ten per cent of their grade
nationally on the National
Educational Development
Tests.
Also awarded for scoring in
the top ten percent from the
seventh grade were Mark
Forsling and George Brooks.
Winning honor certificates,
presented by the teachers of
the grades in which they were
