P- A Cos., jnst in rear of that fine block of ( on South'Broad Street. The bakery va? • fire, but being closed up: nothing could be 2 - only now and then the flames would lick f the crevices like the tongues of 6ome %ry • Anxiety was at its highest pitch. Ten females, ! the handsomest block in town would be I doomed to inevitable- destruction. Already had ! the work of emptying stores begun. But hark ! - ail anxietf is instanHy relieved, by the sharp clear command of “mas rovn brakes!” given by Foreman Eaney, of the stonewall En- Company. The pipeman is at h's post—the nmscular arms of the firemen bend the brakes, and with a “rebel y-,11, ” the stream begins to sing and hiss at the nozzle, like the valve of a steam engine. The window of the burning bnild iftg Is’knocked open, and for a second the livid, reding sea of pent-up fire btlrsU forth from its juison in awful grandeur, forcibly reminding us of those terrible exaggb-ations of the regions tis the damned, to which we have listened so often ' 'Twas but a moment hoNrever. '1 be fire boy thrust his pipe right INTO THE BURNING CRATER, and in a few moments had it under control. The hoy? at the broke* now took an “ail night stroke,” and all joining in s -me lively chorus, continued the work until the last spark of the roaring volca no had been extinguished. CHIEF ENGINEER BE A BODY commanded the Department, nnd again ds-rrwyi strated his ability and capacity to fill the high po - sition he occupies with credit to hi nself and the firemen. Every command given was promptly obeyed and executed, clearly showing the hea’thy discipline that pervades the ranks We heai 4 a stranger remark that he never saw better discipline anywhere. THE “OAK CITY” BOYS. This “crack” company was the first at the fire, but as it happened there Was Very little use for their hooks and ladders. However, they rendered efficient service and are none the less deserving. They were under the command of 2d Assistant Forman W. T. Worn. THE “STONEWARE” BOYS were in their glory. The fire 1 ein£ so situated as to bo entirely in their hands, they putr, forth all their eix-rgh,,-, and were, regard' and fjy sopn seeing the fire mastered, and at least $75,000 worth of property save*l from destruction They, However, did nothingmorfe tluili their duty,-and deserve bredit tor no more. . AHS’T FOREMAN JOHNSON’S BOYS. A.ss’t Johnson has some half dozen boys of from twelve t 6 fourteen years old, on his hose cora_ niittee, and they pioved themselves to bo quite sdrvicable. Jn fact they are invaluable, being small, they couple and uncouple the hose with tlio greatest alacrity, and so noiselessly; that they re minded us of rats nibbling at a cheese. Bully for Johnsons “Bats,” say we. . TltE OpLOIIED PEOPLE, aft usual, rendered valuable assistance. They have the thauks*of the community. . THE FILE. The firemen liaf tlio engine and ap paratus, Mr. T. B Huff newel!, with his accustom-, ed liberality, invited all to mept him at Colbert’s, whete refreshments, such a lemonade, “spiked’» and “unspiked,” liquors, .soda \yatcr, etc., were in waiting for them. Tho thirsty boys were not slow to avail themselves of tho invitation, and went round, and drafik until they had refreshed them - selves. NOBODY DIUJNK. It is with pleasure that we a>Jd, no one was in toxicated, and no Good Templai violated his pledge.. XNCTIJEXTS. It bf stated that wben the alarm sounded somo of the boys went to the Engine and Truck houses, m dishabille. This, we would thick, should be re ceived with duo caution Member Mounger, of the Stonewall, slept quiet • ly in the arms of morphous duriag the excitement, after which the boys went to his room and .pulled him from liis “little "bed, ’ ’ where ho ha’d evidently “put” himself at dusk. Jake Born won th« appellation of “champion singest” of (h* Stotte'witlL THE UCSSFS; 7110 losses wore trifling. 3. P. Dickenson it Cos , we presum'e, will fake warning though and build their new bake house of brick, as -the was caused by the close proximity of the wooden walls with the heated bake oven. WHAT THE FIRE COMPANttS HAVE DONE. The fire companies have saved over SIOO,OOO worth of property from the flames since their or ganization. The cost of said companies to tlfe city has -been, we should judfP, less than $2,000, and if many old fogies had been listened to there would have been no fire, organizations, and the town would have been minus the aforementioned amount —$100,000. - The city taxes -foT the present year, we learn, will be ten dollars on-the thousand'. Property has been assessed at much more than it is worth, in order to make the apparent reduction. Koll of the Members of the Oak City Ilook and Ladder Company No 1 • ’ OFFICERS S L BELCHER,*Foreman.
