Conservationists Of The Year Selected Dr. Phil Hajek and Dr. Tony Hoots were named as Lee County’s Conservationists of the Year by the Lower Chattahoochee River Soil and Water Conservation District. Winners were recognized from each of the district's nine coun ties at the annual banquet held November 15, at the Terrell County Agricultural Building. Dr. Phil Hajek and Dr. Tony Hoots are improving a working peanut and cotton farm with practices to control erosion, im prove water quality, and improve wildlife habitat. Some of those practices include improvement of an existing pond, involvement in the Bob White Quail Initiative, installation of grassed water ways, contour buffer strips, a ri parian forest buffer, tree planting, and wildlife habitat plantings. Double H Farms received the Progressive Farmer Upland Game Management Farm Award in 1996. Each year, the Lower Chattahoochee River District honors nine individuals who ap ply soil and water conservation practices to their land or promote conservation in their community. The district comprises Clay, Lee, Quitman, Randolph, Schley, Stewart, Sumter, Terrell, and Webster counties. Volunteers, or district supervi sors, meet monthly to plan land use programs with the U.S.D.A. Natural Resources Conservation Service and the Georgia Soil and Water Conservation Commis sion. District supervisors assist with water quality projects, pro mote educational programs and discuss current issues. Leesburg Municipal Court Held The following people had traf fic citations/city cases heard by Judge Catherine Spillers. Osman Alvarado-Mencia was found guilty of Speeding 73/ 55and given a $60.00 fine and pled nolo contender to No Proof of Insurance and fined $250.00. Adam Lee Arellano pled nolo contender to Possession of Alco hol by Minor and fined $125.00 and Possession of Marijuana and fined $350.00 with six months probation for both charges. Bruce Auston was found guilty of Improper Parking and fined $70.00. Melvin Diana Brown pled nolo to Driving w/Suspended/Re- voked License ( 1st offense ) andfined $625.00 with 12 months probation. Bill Bullock III pled nolo to Disorderly Conduct on School Propert and. was fined $250.00 with six months probation. Carolyn Moore Casey pled not guilty for Failure to Stop for School Bus. She was found guilty and fined $250.00 with three months probation. Kevin Wilkes was found guilty of Criminal Trespass and fined $375.00 and Obstruction of an Officer and fined $250.00 and given six months probation. Dana Leann Williams pled not guilty to Contributing to Delin quency of Minor, was found guilty and fined $125.00 and given three months probation. Rebecca Daniel pled not guilty to Cruelty to Animals, was found guilty, and fined $70.00. Belinda Clayton was found guilty of Probation Violation, and a warrant was issued. The following person failed to appear in court or make arrange ments to pay their fines. A $25.00 contempt of court fee will be added. A DPS 912 will be issued which will result in suspension of their driver's license if not paid within 20 days. The following fines have the contempt of court fee added. Christmas Parade This Weekend Sentences Issued In Lee County Magistrate Court Chief Magistrate Judge Jim Thurman issued sentences No vember 20 for deposit account fraud account. Allegra Fillmore, charged with probation violation, posted $200.00 cash bond and probation was reinstated. Raychel Ellen Price, charged with probation violation, had pro bation reinstated with special conditions. Amanda Huffine, charged with deposit account fraud, posted a cash bond of $234.09. Kimberly Crowley, charged with three counts of deposit ac count fraud, was sentenced to 12 months jail to be served on pro bation with a $175.00 fine and payment of $93.16 restitution on the first count, sentenced to 12 months jail to be served on pro bation with a $175.00 fine and payment of $48.02 restitution on the second count to be served consecutive to count one. and 12 months jail to be served on pro bation with a $175.00 fine and payment of $74.58 restitution on the third count to be served con secutive to count two. A1 Bryant, charged with deposit account fraud, had the case trans ferred to superior court. Charles J. Clyatt, charged with deposit account fraud, posted a cash bond of $720.86. James Rufus Williams, charged with deposit account fraud, posted a cash bond of $453.95. Richard A. Brown Jr., charged with deposit account fraud, was sentenced to 12 months in jail to be served on probation and to pay restitution of $79.41. Gabriel S. Bacon, charged with deposit account fraud, posted a Smithville Police Files Weekly Report The Smithville Police Depart ment released its most recent in cident reports. Rashaad Damik Sutton, 20, was arrested November 1 for proba tion violation. On November 2, Lt. Smith con ducted a traffic stop for a seat belt violation. As a result of the stop, Lakesia Nicole Cherry, 20, of Americus, was arrested on a bench warrant for controlled sub stance violation by the Sumter County Sheriff’s Department. On November 12, Lt. Smith re sponded to a call regarding a sto len vehicle. The complainant in dicated that Jeffrey Bernard Brown. 19, of Wells Street, Smithville, had taken a car from a Sumter County address. The car was later located, but Mr. Brown was arrested for driving while li cense suspended and obstruction of an officer. On November 16, Lt. Smith was dispatched to A&S Foods re garding a person inside the store that was drunk and refusing to leave. Victor H. Martinez, 35. of Dallas. Texas was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct while intoxicated and obstruction of an officer. Miss LCHS To Be Crowned Twenty-one contestants will vie for the title of Miss Lee County High School on Thursday, De cember 6 at 7:00 p.m. in the Lee County High School Robert Clay Auditorium. Sarah Hallman. Miss LCHS 2001, and Mallory Grebel, Miss LCHS 1999, will serve as emcees for the event. Tickets are $5.00 and may be purchased at the door starting one hour before the performance. Smithville Council Looks Forward To Save The Past The Smithville City Council and Mayor Jack Smith took a gi ant step forward on saving the historical landmarks of Smith ville last week when they voted to create a downtown develop ment authority. The council took this important action during their council meeting last week. The downtown development authority will be able to preserve many of the landmarks in Smith ville while promoting economic development by refurbishing the old buildings and leasing them out to businesses that will draw local residents as well as people from out of town to Smithville. While the mayor and council- men would like to see an indus trial park developed in the north ern end of Lee County, they see the creation of the downtown de velopment authority as a major plus in creating new business op portunities in Smithville. Leesburg Police Files Weekly Report Chief Charles Moore of the Leesburg Police Department re leased the department’s latest in cident reports. On November 19, an officer was dispatched to Leadfoot’s Petro. The owner reported that two of his employees indicated that another employee had been taking items from the store with out paying. Joannie Lee Juarez, 24, of Leesburg, was charged with larceny (theft by taking). As a result of a traffic stop on November 19, Rawlins Lee Darren, 35, of Muckalee Drive was charged with expired tag and no insurance.
