See You Next Week!! Special to the Ledger As the president proclaims National Burn Awareness Week (February 5-11), Children’s Healthcare of At lanta and Safe Kids Georgia remind parents and caregivers that fire is just one cause of burn injuries. Children can also be seriously injured by hot liquids, heating applianc es, hot pots and pans, electri cal currents and chemicals. According to Safe Kids Worldwide, fire and burns are the No. 4 cause of death in children ages 14 and under in the state of Georgia, in part because young children cannot recognize heat-related hazards quickly enough to react appropriately. A child will suffer a full-thickness burn (third-degree burn) after just three seconds of exposure to 140-degree water, and will need surgery and skin grafts. Hills Announce Birth Of Son Jamie and Angel Hill, of Thomson, Georgia, announce the birth of their son, Cannon Wyatt Hill, at 5:15 p.m. on January 15, 2006 at University Hospital in Augusta, Georgia. Cannon weighed six pounds nine ounces and was 19 1/2 inches long. Cannon is the brother of Chalee Hill. His maternal grandparents are Margie Johnson and the late Harvey Johnson of Tifton, Georgia. His paternal grandparents are Charles and Jean Hill of Leesburg, Georgia. This type of burn destroys the outer layer of skin and the en tire layer beneath it, resulting in serious scarring. According to the most recent statistics, each year more than 83,000 children are treated in emergency rooms for burns, including nearly 21,000 who were scalded by hot liquids. “Kids are also at risk around steam irons, curling irons and space heat ers,” said Carol Ball Safe Kids Georgia. “There’s a lot you can do around the home to minimize the risk of burn injuries in everyday life.” Ball urges parents or care givers to: • Set water heaters to 120 degrees Fahrenheit or lower. Consider putting an anti-scald device (about $30) on each water tap and shower head, and check the temperature of a baby’s bathwater before putting the baby in. • Prevent spills. If possible, cook on a back burner. Don’t let pot handles stick out where they can snag loose clothing, and avoid Dooleys Announce Birth Of Son Deveta Faye Fore Dooley and Daniel Dooley, of Law- renceville, Georgia, announce the birth of their son, Conner Liam Dooley on November 21, 2005. At birth, Conner weighed nine pounds and 11 ounces. Conner is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Jack M. Fore, Sr. of Leesburg, Georgia. Mrs. Jo Beth Maxwell is a teacher at Lee County Elementary School. She recently appeared on the school news to share a special haircut with the students. Two years ago, Mrs. Maxwell decided to grow her hair long in order to make a donation to the Locks of Love Foundation. Locks of Love is a nonprofit organization that uses hair donations to make wigs for sick children who could not afford to buy a wig. Mrs. Maxwell’s cousin Abby Hembree at Backstage in Albany, tied the hair into a ponytail before cutting off the required ten inches. Mrs. Maxwell then sent the hair in a sealed bag to Locks of Love in order for a child with a serious illness to receive a wig. The teachers at LCES are very proud of Mrs. Maxwell’s determination and compassion. She was encouraged to share her act of kindness on the school news to encourage others to make this selfless act. Several girls have received haircuts since being inspired by Mrs. Maxwell. For more information please visit locksoflove.org Ramon J. After seeing Mrs. Maxwell on the LCES news, Amber decided it was time for a trim. She came to school with her long ponytail in hand and a beautiful smile on her face requesting her hair be sent to Locks of Love. Her friends and teachers applauded her courage on the LCES morning news. She is the daughter of Joe and Christy Pollock of Leesburg and the grandaughter of Joseph and Beth Pollock, also of Leesburg. Don’t place containers of hot food or liquid near the edge of a counter, and don’t pick up anything hot while hold ing a baby. • Keep electrical cords out of reach, especially exten sion cords and cords con nected to heating appli ances. Make sure electri cal cords can’t be pulled or snagged into a bathtub or sink. Don’t leave a hot iron sitting on an ironing board unattended. • Childproof your home. Cover unused electrical outlets. Lock matches, lighters and flammable materials out of a child’s reach. The basics go a long way toward pre venting burns and other injuries. • Actively supervise. Simply being in the same room with a child is not necessarily supervising. Safety precautions are important, but there is no substitute for active super vision. • Don’t let kids play with fireworks. Fireworks injure more than 4,000 children a year and are il legal in Georgia, although sparklers and other non aerial devices are legal. Fireworks are intended for use by adults in open spaces with plenty of ac tive supervision for every child present.
