Page 6A,The Lee County Ledger, Wednesday, January 9, 2019 Mathis Elected Commission Chairman, Williams Vice-Chairman During the first meet ing of 2019, Billy Mathis was elected chairman and Bill Williams was elected to serve as vice- chairman. Chairman Mathis is beginning a new four year term on the board. He previously served as vice chairman and represents District 3 on the commission. Mr. Williams represents District 5. During the meeting Tuesday, the commis sioners heard from residents that are facing flooding and drainage problems to their proper ty. Larry Christmas and Darren Nailey discussed issues facing property owners on Lumpkin Road. The Intergovernmental Agreement between the commissioners and city councils of Leesburg and Smithville was ap proved involving various services provided by the county. Local govern ments in Georgia are required to develop a service delivery strategy to provide efficient, cost- effective, and responsive services to citizens. For the housing of city prisoners at the jail, the city will impose the add-on fees and fines authorized under the provisions of the Jail Construction and Staff ing Act on all persons sentenced by the munici pal court. Funding for 911 emer gency communications will be funded by the county and the cities. A request for condi tional use approval for a boarding house at 233 Cedric Street was heard by the commissioners. The residential house has been adaptive reused for commercial office space by various busi nesses. The proposed business was created to provide a corporate housing solution with a target market of travel ing professionals seek ing short-term (one week to six months lodging arrangement in the im mediate area. It will pro vide lodging for up to four short-term residents and each resident will be provided a personalized security code to enter the building and their respective suite. Board of Education Set to Welcome New Members Special to the Ledger The Lee County Board of Education will welcome two new members at their next meeting. Probate Court Judge Melanie Gah- ring will swear in Mrs. Donna Ford and Dr. Trey Newell preced ing the 5:30 PM board meeting on Monday, January 14. Mrs. Ford is a retired educator who will represent District I. Elected in May Mrs. Ford will serve the district formerly repre sented by Bob Usry. Dr. Newell is a veterinarian who will represent Dis trict III. Elected in May Dr. Newell will serve the district formerly represented by Louis Hatcher. Since the estab lishment of the first school in Lee County, Starksville Academy in 1839, there has been some form of a board with jurisdiction over schools. The Lee County Board of Educa tion as we know it today began in f872 by act of the Georgia General Assembly. Consisting of five elected members, the Board of Education supervises Lee County Schools providing direction for the schools by selecting the super intendent, approving the budget, hiring person nel, and generally over seeing the direction of the school system. Lee County enjoys a long tradition of strong lead ership from the Board of Education. The Board looks forward to work ing with Mrs. Ford and Dr. Newell to provide the best possible educa tion for the children of Lee County Albany Advocacy Resource Center Names DeAnna Julian Executive Director Special to the Ledger Albany Advocacy Resource Center’s board of directors has ap pointed DeAnna Julian as Executive Director. After serving 2 years on Albany ARC’s board of directors, Julian was named ARC’s Deputy Director in July 2015. She has recently been notified of her upcom ing appointment to the ABLE Board of Directors for the State of Georgia, and she continues to serve as an advocate to area fami lies seeking special- education guidance and support. “We are very much looking forward to benefitting from the visionary leadership that DeAnna brings to our organization,” says Albany ARC board president, Sarah Kirk. “She’s one of the stron gest advocates in the region and, through this new role, will continue to dedicate her life to serving community members with disabili ties and their loved ones.” Having extensive family roots in the local area, Julian obtained her BSED in Special Education from Geor gia Southwestern State University and her MS in Education and Tran sition Services from the University of Kansas. She had a successful 16- year special-education career in Lee County before joining Albany ARC.
