The Lee County Ledger, Wednesday, January 9, 2019, Page 9A The Deadly Sin Of Superiority Special to the Ledger By Kate Scarmalis Culture ebbs and wanes with the pas sage of time. Across the decades of my life, fluctuations in fashion, education and political direction have radically shifted trends over those unruly times. Many changes that I have seen have been beneficial; others not so much. Differences among people and their leaders are expected and desired in a republic. The hot exchange of ideas and perspectives is a signifi cant source of progress in both thought and in governance. The two-party system (while greatly feared by this nation’s founders) has always given ex pression to our differ ences. Unfortunately, as predicted by the found ing fathers, a two-party system often results in the development of fac tions. And these factions lead to insurmountable divisions. The Obama years saw both Democrats and Republicans erecting impregnable ideological barriers. As each party continued to create evi dence of its own superi ority, political compro mise became unneces sary. In fact, for one side to cross over political lines is considered noth ing short of treason Unfortunately, in the case of the leftist cabal, their party is viewed as going beyond the typical level of superiority to the point where the mem bers believe themselves to be morally superior. For the superior class to come into being, the very existence of this elite class requires the existence of an inferior class. And, guess who that may be. As such, the progres sive left became the force that divided this nation into factions. To maintain the myth of the Republican class of deplorables, the leftist elite continues to pull the wool over the eyes of the impoverished voter by fomenting hatred. Much time and attention is given by Democrats and their minions in de faming members of the conservative party. As the leaders lead, the minions are not far behind. According to Hilary Clinton, “You cannot be civil with a politi cal party that wants to destroy what you stand for. I believe if we are fortunate enough to take back the House and or the Sen ate, that’s when civility can start again.” According to the perspec tive of the left, civility is not a blank check made payable to all; it is some thing that must be deserved. As is very evident from Secretary Clinton’s own analysis, the party of the elite may, or may not, at will show respect to their “inferiors” - those with whom they disagree. Does this level of thinking not harken back to the times of the great plantation? The big boss (in the superior class) may or may not show benevolence towards the peasants beneath him/ her. Respect for his (or her) underlings may or may not ensue, simply at the whim of the master. Hilary has made it perfectly clear. The opposition party, the Re publicans, do not deserve civility - until and un less the Democrats once again assume power. Once again they have, in the House of Repre sentatives. And, so it goes. Gird up your loins, conservatives, for we are in for a bumpy ride. With Nancy Pelosi as suming her position as Speaker of the House, each and every bit of new legislation placed before Congress must pass through her. She and she alone is the gatekeeper who sets the agenda for legislation. If she, as Speaker of the House, does not want an item on the schedule, it simply does not appear. It is no coincidence that Democrats currently debate how to face “the existential threat of our time”. Already im peachment proceedings against President Trump have been put forward. Nor is it coincidence that Democrats have advanced plans to eliminate the Electoral College, making it much more likely that Demo crats Gail Drake gres- sional door has slammed open, so to speak. Democrats, now in a ma jority in the House, have begun to see themselves as a juggernaut, one that will continue to pursue Mr. Obama’s nonexistent legacy. Out the door goes the pretense of honor and dignity. For individu als who bear the crown of “superior being”, concern over their own conduct or personal demeanor soon becomes a total waste of effort. Certainly, elitism is no guarantee of decorum, if anything can be inferred by the anti-Trumpers’ atrocious displays. Say what you want, do what you want - no problem. No sooner had the new congressional represen tatives been sworn into office, the internet and news became polluted with vile language. Not many days after Rep. Rashida Tlaib had been sworn into office (over a copy of the Ko ran), she stated that the Democrats were “going to impeach the motherf- —er,” in reference to President Donald Trump. As our leftist leaders continue to make use of derision and poor lan guage choices to portray Republicans in general, so follow their minions. No one on the left side of the political arena faces repercussions for their bad behavior. As we have learned from our lessons in the past, hatred has to be carefully taught. Take, for example, Maxine Water’s state ment on Donald Trump, “What if we get rid of him? Then we’ve got that Vice President and he’ll be worse. . . I say knock off the first one and then go after the second one. We have the power.” Is this a political threat, or do we see this as a threat on the very life of the President? And the Vice President as well? What do we hear from the deaf tone media? . . . Crickets. There is no kryptonite to eradicate these radical progressives. Gird your loins, my friends, gird your loins.
