Special to the Ledger Chief C. Prokesh, Leesburg Police De partment took the Oath of Office for the Lee County Housing Author ity Commission on Janu ary 15, 2019. Chief Prokesh goals of seeking appointment to the Housing Authority Commission were: 1. To further the com mitment of Community- Oriented policing by the Leesburg Police Depart ment 2. To further the build ing of bridges between the City of Leesburg and the Housing Authority Commission. 3. To create tools for the Leesburg Police Department to further establish safer, healthier, and crime-free opportu nities for success for our residents and children in at-risk communities. Special to the Ledger Governor Brian Kemp was administered the oath of office January 14th in Atlanta. Among the thousands in atten dance that day was Lee County’s own Jim Smith aka “Jack” Smith to his friends. Jim’s long time hobby is playing the ped al steel guitar, and he has been playing in country artist Danny Dawson’s band for several months now. As it turns out, Mr. Dawson was invited to perform at the inaugura tion at the McCammish Pavilion on the campus of Georgia Tech. The Kemp organization had been made aware of Danny Dawson and his huge fan base in South Georgia and that Danny was voted the 2017 traditional Country artist of the year for the state of Georgia. Danny has opened concerts for ma jor country artists such as Ronnie Milsap, Tanya Tucker, Travis Tritt, his friend Waylon Jennings and others. Smith stated that he along with Danny and his band mates felt so honored to be there, since, “Governor Kemp could have picked from a host of other Georgia artists and some of them famous but he chose us, It was very humbling to say the least.” Governor Kemp himself had asked Danny to sing “Georgia On My Mind” to wrap up the ceremony. Danny and his band were more than happy to oblige. After the performance, Danny received a stand ing ovation along with a huge smile and thumbs up from Governor Kemp. Smith said, “You just can’t get much bet ter than that.” Jim Smith is a former radio personality known to South Georgians as “Jack O’Brien” but he retired from trucking in 2011. He is currently employed by Lee Coun try transportation as a school bus driver and is known by his students as “Mr. Jim”. Lee County Primary School recently celebrated Connor Paulson’s birthday on January 11th. We all wore crazy socks to help support Connor and his fight with chronic myeloid leukemia. Connor is a 2nd grader at LCPS. Sen. Greg Kirk Appointed Chairman of the Senate Committee on State and Local Governmental Operations Special to the Ledger Sen. Kirk will serve as Secretary of the Senate Health and Human Services Com mittee and as a member of the Senate Appropria tions and Insurance and Labor Committees. “I am incredibly ex cited to work alongside Sen. Kirk and the entire State and Local Gov ernmental Operations Committee during the upcoming session of the Georgia General Assem bly,” said Lt. Governor Geoff Duncan. “The committee process is extremely important to producing sound public policy and we’re con fident that Sen. If the committee gives the legislation a “do pass” recommendation, then the proposed law is sent to the Rules Committee for consideration. The appointed chairs will oversee the operation and order of Senate com mittee meetings, includ ing calling for action on bills, resolutions or other matters assigned to that committee.
