Scott Steiner, FACHE, will become the next President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Phoebe Putney Health System (PPHS) on March 1, 2019. Since 2007, Steiner has served as an executive with Tenet Healthcare Corporation, a Fortune 500 company based in Dallas, TX, operating 70 hospitals and 470 outpa tient centers in 47 states. Steiner currently serves as CEO of four Tenet hospitals in Detroit, MI and previously was CEO of a Tenet hospital in Chicago, IL. “We were extremely pleased and impressed with the quality of the dozens of applicants from around the country who expressed interest in leading our vibrant and growing health system,” said Lem Griffin, Chair man of PPHS Board of Directors. “Our board, medical staff leadership and other leaders in our health system inter viewed an outstanding group of finalists and all agreed that Scott is Special to the Ledger By: Sen. Greg Kirk (R - Americus) It’s hard to believe it’s January and the Gold Dome is once again a flurry of activity. Last week was full of excit ing events as we kicked off the first term of the 155th Georgia General Assembly. On Monday, I was joined by my wife, Rosalyn, as I was sworn into office by Georgia Supreme Court Justice Charlie Bethel. The Sen ate Chamber was filled with friends and families of Senate members, as all 56 of us took an oath to serve the state of Geor gia. Later that day, we attended Governor Brian Kemp’s inauguration where he, Lt. Governor Geoff Duncan and each constitutional official were sworn into office. On Tuesday, Lt. Gov ernor Geoff Duncan was formally introduced to the Senate and presided over the Senate body for the first time. The Com mittee on Assignments announced selections on Tuesday and I was proud to announce that I will be returning as the Chairman of the Senate State and Local Gov ernmental Operations Committee, as well as the new Secretary of the Senate Health and Hu man Services Commit tee. This committee has been a priority of mine throughout my time in the legislature and I am honored to be the third ranking member of this committee. As we address the health care crisis in our state, I am committed to help lead the charge to make Geor gia the leader in health care initiatives nation wide. In addition, I will serve as a member of the Senate Appropriations and Senate Insurance and Labor Committees. Each of these commit tees vets legislation on pressing and timely issues and I am looking forward to working with the right person to lead Phoebe into the future.” Steiner is recognized as an approachable and hands-on leader with a history of guiding organizations known for strong employee, patient and physi cian satis faction. He has a record of strength ening physi cian part nerships, building community collabora tions and serving as a patient safety champion. “Phoebe is an outstand ing organization with a long and proud history of serving the people of southwest Georgia well. Its impressive, expanding team of highly-qualified physicians and other cli nicians brings specialty services and a level of care normally found only in larger metro politan areas,” Steiner said. “Phoebe is a true comprehensive system my colleagues to move good, clean legislation forward. On Thursday, Governor Kemp issued his State of the State address to Sen ate and House members. He discussed the impor tance of his priorities, in cluding access to health care, our education system, including teacher pay raises, as well as the importance of tackling public safety issues such as gang violence and drug trafficking. I look forward to addressing these and other challeng es facing our state during the session. During the interim, several Senate Study Committees met and have been drafting, or have drafted, legislation based on their findings. One of the study com mittees is the Senate School Safety Study Committee. This com mittee traveled across the state, including making a stop in District 13 at Lee County High School. Legislation has already been filed that addresses school safety and will be moving its way through the legislative process soon. This legislation includes the “Keeping Georgia’s Schools Safe Act” which would re quire the implementation of safety plans at schools, as well as streamlining the process of reporting a threat or suspicious be havior, all the way to the action of safety officials on these threats. One legislative week down, with several more to go, but as always our time under the Gold Dome is going to come to an end in the blink of an eye. I am committed to supporting legislation that is best for District 13 and the state of Georgia as a whole. If you ever have any questions or concerns on legislation or would like to make a visit to the Capitol, please reach out to my office and I would be happy to help. with amazing facilities, equipment, technology and employees, and I am impressed with the staff’s commitment to continu ous improvement. I look forward to joining the Phoebe Family on that unceasing journey to find new and better ways to deliver quality care and build commu nity part nerships,” Steiner added. Raised in St. Louis, Steiner gradu ated from Missouri State University before earning a Masters of Business Administration degree with a Health Services Emphasis from Webster University in St. Louis. He began his career in healthcare administration as Director of Physician Network & Development for a hospital in East St. Louis, IL in 1992. He and his wife Tracy, a retired school teacher and active community volunteer, will move to Albany soon. They have two daughters, one cur rently attending medical school and one enrolled in college. “I am driven by faith and family,” Steiner said. “I look forward to becoming an integral part of the com munity and enjoying the many wonderful outdoor activities available in southwest Georgia.” PPHS is a not-for-profit healthcare delivery sys tem serving a population of more than 500,000 residents in southwest Georgia.
