Page 2B, The Lee County Ledger, Wednesday, February 13,2019 Arthritis: There Is No Magic Pill by Lindsay Tompkins Carr, PA-C Premier Orthopedics Everybody knows someone who suffers from arthritis. You may be the person that is af fected. It usually begins during middle age, but no one is affected in the same way. It oc curs at different ages in different people and it progresses at differ ent rates. Unfortunately there isn’t a magic pill to fix it. But, we can treat the symptoms and give you the best possible outcome. Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis and what most patients have when they come to see us. It can af fect every joint, but most commonly it affects the knees, hips, hands, and low back. Risk factors that make you more likely to have arthritis are aging, joint injuries, obesity, and genetics. The symptoms of osteo arthritis can range from occasional sharp pains with activity, to constant dull pain and stiff ness that causes severe restrictions in function. Other symptoms include tenderness, swelling, limited motion, joint de formity, and instability. There are many forms of treatment for arthri tis. The options can vary based on the body part, but generally we follow a similar treat ment protocol. The first step would be treatment that you can do on your own. This includes over the counter medica tion, weight loss, and exercise. All of these treatment options can be done before you even see the doctor. The most important of these would be weight loss. Being overweight is a huge risk factor for LCHS Seniors Compete in State Swim Meet by Jen Perkins The Lee County High School Swim Team closed out the 2018-2019 season with a celebra tion of competition at the GHSA State Swim Meet on February 8, 2019. The 6A-7A State Championship was held at Georgia Tech’s McAu- ley Aquatic Center. At the beginning of the season, each high school swimmer was presented with a lami nated card displaying the state qualifying times for each event. The card provided a constant reminder of what was expected to qualify for the State Meet. It served as a reminder during practice to complete the kick set even if you are tired, and during a meet, as the concrete goal to work towards achieving. Competition is more than just a means to compare yourself to others in a specified way. Competition is the internal drive to do bet ter each time a swimmer enters the pool. Com petition is a mindset. It is the decision to rise to the challenge of a race. It is not concern ing yourself of what others can and will do, because that is beyond your control. Competi tion is focusing on what you as an individual can do and then executing the plan. Competition is also putting everything you have as an athlete into that race and when it is completed, rest in the knowledge that you could not have offered more of yourself. The LCHS Swim Team celebrated competition in all those ways during the Women’s 200 Freestyle Relay. The team con sisted of an all senior squad: Aubrey Garrett, Erica Sellars, Rachel Kiesau, Lexi Rosso, and Anna Grace Haggerty as alternate. The coaches would like to wish all the seniors on the LCHS Swim Team well in everything they have before them in life and in swimming. They will be greatly missed on the team next year. Thank you to all the parents who worked so hard in making the State Championship Meet a positive and memorable experience for the swim mers and the coaches. Weight loss can significantly reduce joint pain particularly in hips and knees. If those treatment options do not work for you, I recommend coming into our office at Premier Orthopedics. We can get a full history as well as x-rays to con firm that you have ar thritis. We will develop a treatment plan that is individualized to you. Some of the treatments that we may use in the office include topical anti-inflammatories, oral anti-inflammatories, cortisone injections, formal physical therapy, and braces. We can use these treatments in com bination of those that you can do on your own. Depending on the joint that is affected, there may be other options that could be available to you as well. Many patients can be treated conservatively with the above methods for an extended period of time. When the pain from arthritis is affect ing your lifestyle and keeping you from doing what you want to do, it would be time to move on to joint replacement surgery. This can be a scary thought to many people. However, joint replacements have come a long way in the past decade. It can radically reduce pain in people that have significant arthritic symptoms. If you are considering joint replacement surgery, I recommend coming in and speaking to a provider to get more information about treat ment options for you.
