The University of Georgia • Cooperative Extension Service Saucer Magnolia Doug Collins, Lee County Extension Coordinator Putting PCnowledge toWorkH A warm February caused Saucer Magnolias to bloom in the first part of February this year. Saucer Magnolia The Saucer Magno lia is perhaps the most popular magnolia in the U.S. Part of the reason for this is its winter har diness. It can be grown right up to the lower parts of North Dakota and Minnesota. There are many Saucer Mag nolias in the Leesburg area. Some of them are quite large. The flowers of the saucer magnolia range in color from white to purplish, with pink vari eties being very popular. Plants can range in ma ture size from the size of a large shrub to that of a small tree. Plants can be multistemmed. They can normally grow two feet per year. They can grow to a height of twenty to thirty feet high. A large mature saucer magnolia in full bloom can be a stunning sight. A good selection of cultivars is available. The Saucer Magnolia was actually created by crossing Magnolia denu- date (Yulan Magnolia) with Magnolia liliiflora (Lily Magnolia). This cross was made by Eti enne Soulange-Bodin, a retired cavalry officer in Napoleon’s army, at his chateau near Paris in 1820. Unlike other magno lias, Saucer Magnolias have a fleshy root system and only a few lat eral roots and root hairs. Because of this, Saucer Magnolias should be transplanted using balled and burlapped plants or plants in contain ers. The soil into which these plants are to be transplanted should be deep and moist. The soil should, if possible, be acidic. It is a good idea to mix some leaf mold or peat moss in the soil at planting. Plant in a spot with full sun or light shade.
