Now I had eaten here before, when I worked in Alba ny, but only at lunch. The lunch was always great and I had no reason to believe that their dinners would be any different. As I pulled into the park ing lot I saw a bummy looking guy sitting by the lamp post eating some chicken. Another homeless looking guy came around the corner and they got into some sort of conversation. I had to maneuver around them and I thought, “Someone should do something about these people hanging around here. It could drive away business”. I go inside and there is man ordering food and then I see another outdoorsy looking fellow standing at the end of the counter. I hear him ask the girl if she has anything for him. She gives him two pieces of chicken and out the door he goes. I’m thinking, “I’m in the wrong line, that line over there gives John Wallace you free food.” Then it’s my turn and I ordered a 8 piece family chicken dinner. For a family of two. And yes, I paid for it. Just so you know, I am not going to tell you the name of this place and you shall soon find out why. And it has nothing to do with you getting free chicken. And they got them some good chicken. I get my order and as I am leaving another down and outer opens the door and holds it for me and then he goes in. I’m thinking what is with this place? All these guys that obviously don’t have a dime in their pockets, going in and getting handouts. Why does the owner allow this? Some people pay good money to eat here. And some people that don’t have any money get to eat here for free. What kind of world is this that this sort of thing goes on? And then it hit me. This is how it is sup posed to be. It’s in our moral DNA. Those who can should take care of those who can’t. I know some of you will say they are just lazy people Submitted Photo LCES students LOVE trying out the new instruments in music. I have been there and, sometimes bad things happen to good people and, hey, I pulled out of my nosedive but not everyone is so lucky. The thing I remember most from those days is ev eryone is doing the best they can. But sometimes things don’t shake out the way you think they will. And you could use a helping hand. If you have never been down and out, you have been blessed. But have a little compas sion for those who have not. Recently I read a story about a man who was walking with his father when a deadbeat came up and asked them for money so he could eat. The man refused to give money to the deadbeat but his father reached in his pocket and gave the guy a five dollar bill. Af ter the deadbeat thanked him and left, the man said to his father, “You know he will go and buy wine with that money.” The father said, “If he said he needed money for food and he spends that money on wine, well, that says a lot about his character. But if he asked me for help, and I could have helped him, but I choose not to.. .well, that would say a lot about my character.” This whole episode put me in mind of a few verses from the Bible, although I am sure there is something similar in all religious writings. Like the Golden Rule. Or when Jesus spoke of being Righteous. “I was hungry and you gave me something to eat.” “That which you do for the least of my brothers and sisters, you do for me.” And finally, the reason I will not put this busi ness’s business on the street is another reading from the Bible. This one says when you are giving to the needy, don’t let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.. Don’t blow your own trumpet about what a good person you are. The Lord will know what you did and you will be rewarded. Anyway I saw this the other day and I was impressed. Verily. Ev erywhere you go, people who know about these things tell us to be good to one another. Turns out some of us just talk the talk and some of us walk the walk. This guy is the real deal.
