This week serves as a reminder for parents to talk with their preteens and teens about getting immunized against vaccine-prevent- able diseases. “Every parent wants to protect their child from danger, yet many times parents don’t see vacci nation as a priority,” said Dr. Charles Ruis, Health Director for Southwest Health District. “Vac cinating your child is the single best way to protect them from these preventable diseases, so we urge parents to make this a priority.” According to the Georgia Department of Public Health Rule (5H-2-2), the following students are required to have proof of vaccina tions protecting them against meningitis AND pertussis (also known as whooping cough): all students born on or after January l, 2002 students entering or transferring into seventh ompany the marketplace FREE TAX SHOPPING Saturiay. This law affects all public and private schools including, but not limited to, charter schools, community schools, juvenile court schools and other alter native school settings (excluding homeschool). Ruis said vaccines are the best defense we have against serious, preventable and some times deadly conta gious diseases. They help avoid expensive therapies and hospital ization needed to treat infectious diseases like influenza and meningi tis. Immunizations also reduce absences both at school and after school activities and decrease the spread of illness at home, school and the community. In addition, the Cen ters for Disease Control currently recommends Human Papillomavi rus (HPV) vaccine for preteens and teens. The HPV vaccine is effective in preventing certain cancers as well as vene real warts. “Georgia Preteen Vac cine Awareness Week is an opportunity to raise awareness through schools, health care providers and the media regarding preteen immu nizations, particularly Georgia’s pertussis and meningococcal require ments for incoming seventh-grade students,” Ruis said. “Speak with your health department or healthcare provider today to find out if your preteen is up-to-date.” For more information about preteen and teen immunizations, contact your county health de partment or your health care provider. 6:0 □ p m - 8: □ 0 p m Family Bingo Night at LCMS West Campus Special to the Ledger Join LCMS West for a special Family Bingo Night this Thursday, February 28, from 6:00 until 8:00 pm.
