Students attended various workshops that covered topics such as professionalism, networking, and leadership skills. Students were given the opportunity to interact with other middle school chapters from around the state as well as FBLA State Officers on the high school and middle school level. The FBLA advisor at LCMSE is Mrs. Nicole Mallory. John Sumner Chapter CDXVIIC Attends Annual Spring Conference Special to the Ledger John Sumner Chapter CDXVIIC President Beth Usry, Registrar Freida Boyles, State Auditor Kay Ragan and Recording Secretary Sandi Driskill attended the Tea at the Glendal- ough Manor in Tyrone, Georgia honoring Third Vice President General Dianne Brown Cannes- tra and Honorary Presi dent General Mary Stagg Johnson. State President Rachel Colbert and State President Elect Sherryl Miles welcomed attend ees as they went through the receiving line. Beau tiful floral arrangements were in the foyer and on the buffet tables. After the Tea mem bers returned to the hotel for the Hour of Remembrance led by State Chaplain Sharon Sowders. President Usry placed a white carnation in memory of chapter member Frances Bishop who passed away May 13, 2018. A special trib ute was given by Amelia Pelton for Honorary State President and Past Organizing Secretary General Camille Red- fern Lowery who died December 4, 2018. total of fifteen names were read during the Memo rial Roll Call and a white carnation was placed in their memory as their chapter members stood. That evening mem bers attended a formal banquet. Honorary President General Mary Stagg Johnson presented a program reflecting on her term as President General from 2003 - 2005. The next morning State Officers and Chairman gave their reports fol lowed by Chapter Presi dents. Chapter President Beth Usry related some of the highlights of the John Sumner Chapter for the past year. At the Awards Luncheon the chapter was awarded fourteen certificates in recognition of their accomplishments. State Officers were installed and members who had served our country were recognized. Natural Resources Conservation Workshop at ABAC in Tifton June 9-13 Special to the Ledger Over $15,000 in college scholarships, back-to-na- ture field trips, and a true taste of college life will be on the line for high school students who attend this year’s Natural Resources Conservation Workshop (NRCW) on June 9-13 at Abraham Baldwin Agri cultural College. “The workshop provides an excellent opportunity to engage high school stu dents in the importance of natural resources and agriculture in Georgia,” NRCW Interim Direc tor Kip Hall, an assistant professor of forestry at ABAC, said. “During NRCW, students gain a new perspective on con servation, stewardship, and sustainable agricul ture with both classroom and outdoor experiential learning. The workshop opens the door for many students to consider a college major for a career in agriculture and natural resources.” Students participating in the workshop will attend lectures and hands-on activities to boost their knowledge of Georgia’s vital natural resources. Local, state, and federal natural resource agencies and specialists from uni versities will host these sessions. The workshop provides students with a taste of college life while deliver ing valuable insight into careers through their counselors and instruc tors. These profession als consist of ABAC admissions person nel, the Department of Natural Resources, the USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service, the Georgia Forestry Com mission, the University of Georgia (UGA) Coopera tive Extension Service, the Warnell School of For estry at UGA, the Georgia Soil and Water Conserva tion Commission, and many private industries and organizations. “When I was asked about attending NRCW week at ABAC I was unsure what to expect, but I knew it would be a great chance to get a glance into college life,” Trey Tyre, a 2017 student attendee, said. “Com ing from a farm family, I know that conservation is very important. I learned so much about forestry, wildlife conservation, and the conservation of ma rine resources during the week. It was an amazing experience.” Tuition is $175 per stu dent before the early bird deadline of May 1. After May 1, tuition increases to $200 per student to attend the workshop. The final application deadline is June 1. Tuition is usually provided to the students by local Soil and Water Conservation Districts, local businesses, and indi viduals. The workshop applica tion process is available online at http://www.abac. edu/nrcw. The students must first complete the online portion of the application. Next, they will work with their local NRCS office and/ or Georgia Soil & Water Conservation Commission representative to submit the remaining portions of the application.
