The Lee County Ledger, Wednesday, March 27,2019, Page 7B Jesus believed every word of the Bible. Do you? By Charles Harris Pastor, Beattie Road Church of Christ When one reads the ac counts pro vided of the life of Jesus in the New Testa ment, the knowl edge and respect that He had for the Old Testament Scrip tures ought to impress upon us the same urgent need to increase our own knowledge and respect for God’s Word. Jesus believed the words of the Bible. When He taught about the resurrection of the dead, He quoted from Exodus, “I am the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Ja cob,” to prove that “God is not the God of the dead, but of the living” (Matthew 22:37). Jesus believed the words of the Bible. Do you? Jesus believed the sto ries of the Bible. When He taught about the nature of His own death, He illustrated it by referring to when “Moses lift ed up the serpent in the wilder ness” (John 3:14). Jesus believed the stories of the Bible. Do you? Jesus believed the prophecies of the Bible. When He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah in the synagogue in Nazareth, He read from Isaiah 49:8-9 and then said, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing” (Luke 4:16-21). Jesus believed the prophecies of the Bible. Do you? Jesus believed the eter nal truths of the Bible. When He was asked about the ever-important subject of marriage, He pointed His challengers to “the beginning of the creation” (when God created marriage) and quoted this everlasting precept of God, “For this reason a man shall Charles Harris Hood , from Page 5B insistent that the Ninevites hear His message and that Jonah deliver it. God got everyone’s attention by almost sinking the ship Jonah had taken. The crew followed Jonah’s instructions to throw him into the sea to stop God from His judgement on them. “And he said to them, ‘Pick me up and throw me into the sea; then the sea will become calm for you. For I know that this great tempest is because of me.’” (v 12) And so they did. Enter Hudid. Hudid is the whale that swallowed Jonah. My four-year-old daughter said so. “Now the Lord had prepared a great fish to swallow Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.” (v 17) The strangest thing happened to Jonah after being in the belly of the whale for three days and three nights. He decided that running from the presence of the Lord may not be in his best interests after all. “Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the fish’s belly.” (2:1) He is again seeking the presence of the Lord, no longer running. The crisis of belief: the deci sion to obey or disobey. He chooses obedience. “When my soul fainted within me, I remembered the Lord; and my prayer went up to You, into Your holy temple. Those who regard worthless idols forsake their own Mercy. But I will sacrifice to You with the voice of thanks giving; I will pay what I have vowed. Salvation is of the Lord.” (2:7-9) Oh, look at the time! Tune in next week when “So the Lord spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.” (2:10) Bible , from Page 6B saith unto him, Feed my L sheep. Verily, verily, b I say unto thee, When i: thou wast young, thou t< girdedst thyself, and a walkedst whither thou a wouldest: but when thou t< shalt be old, thou shalt tl stretch forth thy hands, o and another shall gird d thee, and carry thee s whither thou would- o est not. This spake he, tl signifying by what death n he should glorify God. tl And when he had spo- 7 ken this, he saith unto him, Follow me. Then Peter, turn- p ing about, seeth the F disciple whom Jesus F loved following; which E also leaned on his breast C at supper, and said, b Lord, which is he that betrayeth thee? ... This is the disciple which testifieth of these things, and wrote these things: and we know that his testimony is true. And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Jesus be lieved the eternal truths of the Bible. Do you? Jesus believed even the “hard to believe” things in the Bible. There is a story in the Old Testament that tops every skeptics list as something they count to be “purely mythical” or “scientifically impos sible.” In their estima tion, “Jonah was never swallowed by a big fish, surviving three days in its belly before being ex truded out on land none the worse for wear.” However, of all the ways to depict His burial and His resurrection on the third day, Jesus chose to use the story of Jonah for compari son. “.. .No sign will be given...except the sign of the prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth” (Matthew 12:39- 41). Jesus believed even the “hard to believe” things in the Bible. Do you? Do you believe in Jesus? If so, do you, like Him, believe every word of the Bible? Do you respect the Bible like Jesus did?
