These trees were once grown commercially in the Southeast. Tung Tree Tung tree seeds were first brought to the U. S. in 1903. The first Tung trees were planted in Florida in 1906. The first Tung oil was extracted in 1913. By 1938, there were about 200,000 acres planted in Tung trees in the southeastern U. S. Tung tree plantings peaked during World War II in an effort to make up for the interrup tion in the importation of Tung oil from China. Tung oil has many uses, including use in paints, lacquers, varnishes, and printing inks. It has been used as an underwater sealer and wire insulator. It can be processed into lubricating oil. In China, it was used as a gasoline extender during World War II. The Tung tree is well suited to the climate of the Gulf States. Dur ing World War II, it was planted in Georgia and Florida to make up for the interruption of tung oil from China. Late freezes and Hurricane Camille basically put an end to tung oil produc tion in Florida. There is still a Tung tree in Leesburg. According to what I have learned at a restaurant I used to fre quent for lunch, that tree is the last survivor of a grove of Tung trees. My brother and I found an old sheet of graph paper dated 1943 that charted a pecan grove on my fa ther’s farm. Included in that grove was a planting of Tung trees. Nothing remains of those Tung trees today. Tung trees are consid ered an invasive species in Florida. In the spring, the trees are covered with pretty flowers. The trees are sometimes planted as ornamentals. Tung oil is obtained from the tung tree’s seed kernels. Dried Tung seed will yield about twenty percent oil. Because of the high cost of Tung oil, it has been replaced by epoxy resins for some uses. It should be noted that all parts of the Tung tree, including the fruit and the seed, is poison ous. The seed is espe cially poisonous. One seed has enough poison to be fatal. I know of only one tung tree in Leesburg, but I have received reports of others in Lee County that were in bloom this year. Meredith Lipson from Mauldin & Jenkins gave an update to the county commissioners on the 2018 annual audit.
