Sunday, April 7th Special to the Ledger If you’d like to explore the idea of a recreational trail that will soon connect the downtown Albany trails to the town of Sasser - go take a hike Sunday, April 7th at 2:00 p.m. Or a bike or a run or a jog or a stroll or just mosey around. Albany Sasser Rail Trail at Fussell Road which is 1.8 miles from the intersection of Hwy. 82 and Fussell Road in Lee County Please wear your biking, hiking, running jogging, strolling or moseying shoes. You and your family are invited to get off the couch and off the beaten path for a on-of-a-kind preview of a section of the future Albany-Sasser Rail Trail. All volunteers will be wearing Snickers Mara thon shirts. The Exchange Club of Albany is provid ing parking attendants to move traffic from Fussell Road into the parking area provided by Albany Bible Church with any overflow directed to the other two churches along Fussell Road. Mile Markers will be placed at Miles 2,3 and 4. Water Sta tions with Port-A-Potties will be available at the beginning of the trail, at Mile Marker 2 and at the end of the trail at Mile Marker 4. Oxford Construction Company has recently mowed the trail and will mow the trail one more time before the event. Oakland Plantation Part ners, LLC is providing the resources for replac ing some of the crossties on the trestle and plac ing plywood across the trestle making the trestle safe for walking - not for vehicles. The Albany Audubon Society will have volun teers at both ends of the trestle with instructions on crossing.The Albany Area YMCA is provid ing two Albany YMCA vans with their certified drivers for shuttles back to the beginning of the trail from Mile Markers 2 and 4. The Lee County Sheriff’s Department will have a vehicle and a Sheriff’s Deputy at the trailhead for traffic control. The Albany to Sasser Rail Trail is being built by the City of Albany and will be complete by spring of 2020. The trail follows the right-of-way of an abandoned rail line that heads northwest out of Albany through western Lee County and on to Sasser in Terrell County. The trail will feature different envi ronments of southwest Georgia including urban development in Albany, suburban growth in Lee County and the rural farm and forest lands of both Lee and Terrell. When complete, the Rail Trail will be a 13.62 mile, 12 foot wide multi use asphalt trail leading from downtown Sasser to just north of Tift Park in Albany. The Rail Trail will in clude trailhead facilities in Sasser and near Tift Park in Albany, as well as two in Lee County. These will include automobile parking, restrooms, and drinking water. There will also be parking areas to ac cess the trail on Slappey Boulevard and at the end of I3th Avenue.
