Promise to pay Counseling Corner Learning To Let Your Children Make Mistakes Special to the Ledger from the American Counseling Association What parent doesn’t want to protect their children, to see them safe, healthy and happy? Such concerns are part of our DNA, inherited from our cave dwell ing ancestors and their dangerous world. While today’s kids don’t need protection from saber- toothed tigers, there are still numerous ways for children to make mistakes. As parents we need to realize that some mistakes are “good mis takes,” errors in decision making that may result in the wrong outcomes, but that can be valuable learning experiences for our children. Parents always have a responsibility to try and keep truly dire, life-threatening conse quences from occurring. But trying to ensure that children never make a bad decision, whether as toddlers, teens or even young adults, is re ally not doing them any favors. The modern term for overly-protective moms and dads is “helicopter ing.” It describes parents who constantly are hov ering over their child, trying to ensure that all goes well. It’s parents keeping in constant con tact and trying to help their child make all the right decisions. When Dad is up all night finishing that school science project, it isn’t helping prepare the child for the future. Kids with overly-protec tive parents often have trouble making their own decisions because they know mom or dad is always there to jump in. Such children can also end up rebelling strongly as their desire and need for indepen dence grows. And no, it isn’t always easy to give your kids room to make their own decisions, good or bad. However it’s impor tant that they do so for healthy development. And parents can still be involved. You can be there while they work through their dilemmas and to help point them toward good solutions, but your job isn’t to find the solutions for them. Yes, you should be ready to step in when a child’s decision could be dangerous or life threat ening, but giving your kids more space helps build confidence and independence. It encour ages them to try new things, even things that might seem scary. You want to offer sympathy and understanding when things go wrong, but don’t always try to make things right. When a child is al lowed to face possible failure, and even some times to experience it, he or she will learn valuable lessons about growing up. “Counseling Cor ner” is provided by the American Counseling Association. We’ve consid ered dropping this insur ance soon and going to a cheaper Christian medi cal sharing program. We’ve got about $19,000 in debt between credit cards and a car pay ment, and we’re on Baby Step 2 of your plan. Our thought was to fund the HSA for a period of time as a means of saving, cancel that policy, then go over to a medical shar ing program we found that costs $600 a month less. After that, we would start paying down debt again. What do you think? Amy Dear Amy, There are two com ponents to an HSA, the insurance component and the savings com ponent. You don’t have to participate in the savings component. The insurance component is simply a large deduct ible, 100 percent cover age after the deductible, cheaper-premium health insurance plan. If I were in Baby Step 2,1 would not do the savings com ponent. I would only do the insurance compo nent, or I’d do the medi cal sharing program. I’m not sure why you’d need to jump back and forth it you’re going to permanently move to a medical sharing pro gram. I get the idea of saving money, but what you’re talking about isn’t something I’d recom mend for someone who’s in debt. I wouldn’t fund a savings account of several thousand dollars only for medical when you’re not even on Baby Step 3, which is saving an emergency fund of three to six months of expenses. That money needs to be used to pay off debt first. It’s not the end of the world if you don’t fund the HSA por tion of your current insurance plan. If you went with a medical sharing program, and just saved up a large emergency fund, the only thing you’d really lose out on is the tax de duction associated with an HSA.
