This pro gram aims to support and enhance our local school systems by offering grants up to $500.00 for each individual teacher to ini tiate programs which supple ment their classroom curriculum. The grants are avail able to teachers in the Dougherty and Lee County School Systems as well as in the inde pendent schools in the city of Albany, Georgia. Lee County was fortu nate to have four grants awarded to our school system. Twin Oaks Elementary School: Mrs. Kirksey, 5th Grade ELA Teacher was awarded a grant for escape rooms. All 5th grade classes will use the escape room equip ment to create lessons in all subject areas both virtually and in person. Lee County Middle School West: Mrs. Rol lins, 7th Grade Science Teacher was awarded a grant to fund big robot ics. Lee County High School 9th Grade Cam pus Media Specialists Mrs. Edwards and Mrs. Ellington were awarded a grant for an iPad for their news show and broadcasting. Lee County High School Teachers Mr. Holt (ELA) and Mrs. Fulford (Science) were awarded a grant for weather forecasting equipment. Mr. Holt will be able to use the equipment to assist his senior broadcasting class. Mrs. Fulford’s AP Environmental Science students will be able to use the equipment to analyze weather pat terns. Their hours of operation are Monday - Friday 7:30 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. and Saturday 8:30 a.m. -12:30 p.m., Boarding Pick-up on Sunday from 4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. Owner/Veterinarian Dr. Kenneth Greene. They specialize in small/large animal veterinary practice. They are a full service hospital that offers in-depth medical work-ups and are able to perform complex medical procedures. They have the only CT Scan in South Georgia and the only locally federal and state wildlife rehabilitators. They offer small animal medicine and surgery, ambulatory large animal farm calls and they also see a wide range of exotic animals. 8 10499 02456 8 George Walls was administered his oath of office April 30th by Probate Judge Melanie Gahring to serve as county commissioner for County Commis sion District 5 which is known as the Redbone District. Mr. Walls was the only candidate to qualify for the County Commission District 5 special election. The special election was called to fill the vacancy due to the recent death of Commissioner Bill Williams. The special election was cancelled because Mr. Walls was the only candidate to qualify. George Walls and his wife, Fran, are the parents of two adult children, George Jr. and Brandie Hurst. He is is a Navy veteran. Mr. Walls worked for the Water, Gas Light Commission in Albany for 45 years. He was the Director of Engineer ing when he retired. He has been a member of the Lee County Utilities Authority since it was created by the General Assembly in April 1992. He currently serves as its chairman. Mr. Walls is a member of Thundering Springs Baptist Church and Masonic Lodge 591. As a county commis sioner, Mr. Walls will devote his time and energy to insure that Lee County continues to operate within the es tablished budget guide lines. He said that he will not vote to increase taxes and will strive to ensure proper road maintenance, repairs, resurfacing and paving are done utilizing the re cent voters’ approved T SLOST Funds to benefit Lee County citizens. Mr. Walls stressed that he will follow the conser vative principles estab lished by the late Com missioner Bill Williams. George Walls said that he will have an open door policy to discuss and listen to concerns from Lee County citi zens.
