Special to the Ledger Owens Corning Platinum Contractors are working with Purple Heart Homes Inc to pro vide new roofs to vet erans in need and their families as part of the Owens Corning Roof Deployment Project. Veteran Doug El lis and his family will receive a new roof on Tuesday, May 7, from S&S Roofing and Construction, an Owens Corning Roofing Plati num Contractor. This nationwide effort is a way to show gratitude and honor the veterans who served our country and the families who support them. Since the inception of the Owens Corning National Roof Deployment Project in 2016, more than 120 military members have received new roofs. Mr. Ellis is a retired, U.S. Army veteran who served two tours in Iraq before returning to Fort Bragg after his second deployment. Ellis was honorably released from active duty due to injuries sustained over seas and was medically discharged in 2013. “Doug has spent his entire life putting others first and after hearing his story, we are in debted for his service and patriotism to our country,” said Mike Strickland, Owner of S&S Roofing and Con struction. “It’s an honor to install a new roof for a veteran as deserving as Doug and to be able to provide him with peace of mind that his fam ily will be protected for years to come.” Owens Corning Roof ing and its network of independent Platinum Contractors, along with support from the Owens Corning Foundation, are donating roofing materi als and labor to replace roofing shingles on the homes of military vet erans and their families throughout the country. Through a partner ship with Purple Heart Homes, Doug Ellis was selected and approved as the recipient for the roof replacement. “We are proud to part ner S&S Roofing and Construction to provide Doug and his fam ily with a new roof for their house,” said Brad Borders, Vice President of Program Services at Purple Heart Homes. “It’s inspiring and re warding to team up with local companies to make life-changing moments like this possible for our veterans.” For more information on the Roof Deployment Project, or to learn more about how you can get involved, visit www. American Legion Boys State is among the most respected and selective educational programs of government instruc tion for U.S. high school students. A participa tory program in which students become part of the operation of local, county and state gov ernment, Boys State was founded in 1935 to counter the socialism- inspired Young Pioneer Camps. The program was the idea of two Illinois Legionnaires, Hayes Kennedy and Harold Card, who organized the first Boys State at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Spring- field. At Boys State, par ticipants learn the rights, privileges and respon sibilities of franchised citizens. The training is objective and cen ters on the structure of city, county and state governments. Operated by students elected to various offices, Boys State activities include legislative sessions, court proceedings, law- enforcement presenta tions, assemblies, bands, choruses and recreation al programs.
