Special to the Ledger By David Shivers The Kiwanis Club of Dougherty County recently wrapped up its 39th annual Student Art Contest with a luncheon honoring winners at the Hilton Garden Inn on May 6. Awards were presented to first-, second-, and third-place finishers in the competition, which included entries from sixth through twelfth grades in public and private schools in Dougherty and Lee counties. Also named were middle and high school “Schools of Dis tinction.” During the event, a segment was devoted to honoring the late Dr. Gray Fountain, a co-founder of the club’s student art contest in 1980. A special plaque was accepted on behalf of the Fountain family by two of his daughters, Juby Philips and Toy Fountain. “Daddy loved Kiwanis,” said Toy Fountain of her father, who was also instru mental in establishing Kiwanis of Dougherty’s scholarship foundation. Named as Schools of Distinction were South west Georgia Home School Association and Dougherty High School. Accepting those awards were Darlene Butler and Samantha Fields, respectively. Recipients received cash prizes. They were: middle school, first place, $35; second place, $25; third place, $15; high school, ninth grade, first place, $75; second place, $50; third place, $35; tenth through elev enth grades, first place, $100; second place, $75; third place, $35. Best of Show winners earned $250 for first place, $150 for second place, and $125 for third place. A total of $1,585 was awarded. Art contest co-chairs Kristin Caso and Barbi Fisher presented the fol lowing honors: Best of Show: first place, Nathaniel Bryant, ninth grade, Dougherty High School; second place, Justice Craig, 12th grade, Dougherty High School; and third place, Malik Jones, 11th grade, Westover High School. Sixth Grade: first place, Grace Ramsey; Lee County Middle East, second place, Timiyah Brown, Deer field Windsor School; third place, Chloe Ann Wiggins, Deerfield Windsor School; honor able mentions, Sloan Odom, Lee County Mid dle West, and Colleen Hood, Deerfield Wind sor School. Seventh Grade: first place, Ann Willard, Southwest Georgia Home School; second place, Ester Yoon, Southwest Georgia Home School; third place, Anna Willard; honorable mentions, Jayden Perkins, Lee County Middle West, and Anna Willard. Eighth Grade: first place, Tristan Hatfield, Southwest Georgia Home School; second place, Tyler Miller, Albanh Middle School; third place, Asia Barnes, Radium Middle School of the Arts; honorable mentions, Kay Lee Wil son, Lee County Middle West, and Genevieve Lanier, Deerfield Wind sor School. Four of the local con test winners went on to place in the Georgia Dis trict Art & Music Show case held at Lee County High School in April. They were Dougherty High School senior Justice Craig, third place in Best of Show, which earned her a $1,000 scholarship from the Georgia Kiwanis Dis trict Foundation; Anna Willard, first place, seventh grade, and Tristan Hatfield, second place, eighth grade, both from Southwest Georgia Home School Associa tion; and Nathaniel Bry ant, third place, ninth grade at Dougherty High School. Submitted Photo LCMS-E FBLA and TSA Members Volunteer at the Aspire Art Fest Students in Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) and Technical Student Association (TSA) at LCMSE volunteered at the Aspire Art Festival that was held on April 27, 2019 from 4 pm - 8 pm. The event was held at the Albany Museum of Art. Aspire hosted the event in support of children’s mental health awareness. There were activities such face painting, finger painting, paint balloon pop, life-size art activities, toddler crafts, creative station and color powder relay race. The event was free and was open to the community. The students assisted with various activities throughout the day. Mrs. Nicole Mallory is the LCMSE advisor for FBLA and TSA.
