The word “dandelion” is derived from a French term meaning “lion’s tooth”. Dandelions and closely related species can mar the appearance of an otherwise neat lawn, es pecially when the lawn is dormant and the green dandelion leaves stand out against the dormant grass like a sore thumb. Dandelions have pretty little yellow flowers. Like other members of the Asteraceae family (the Asteraceae fam ily contains sunflow ers, marigolds, daisies, and chrysanthemums, along with ragweed and goldenrod), the flower is composed of a cluster of very small flowers. The seed head is the familiar sphere of seeds born on a stalk that we blew as children and watched the seeds fly away. This characteristic of the seeds to be carried by the wind helps to disperse the seeds and thus spread new plants. honors (3.8 through 4.0). • Leesburg - Lee M. Tatum, High Honors. A lawn can become heavily infested with dandelions if they are left unchecked. Dandelions have a large taproot—a fact known by anyone who has ever tried to pull one up. The whole dande lion plant is edible. Dandelions are very controllable with a com mon herbicide. 2,4-D + MCPP + dicamba provides good control of dandelions in zoysia- grass and bermudag- rass. Atrazine provides fair (less than “good”) control in centipede and St. Augustine. It can either be used as a broadcast spray over the whole lawn or as a spot treatment for individual plants. Be aware that desirable plants, includ ing roses and grapes, are very sensitive to this herbicide. Always read and follow label instructions when using pesticides.
