The Lee County Ledger Wednesday, June 26,2019 - Page IB Senator David Perdue Encourages Physical Activity & Healthy Lifestyles Cosponsors Bill Allowing Pre-Tax Dollars To Be Used Toward Fitness Expenses Special to the Ledger U.S. Senator David Perdue (R-GA) is tak ing action to incentiv- ize healthier living and encourage more physical activity in the United States. The Senator cospon sored the bipartisan Personal Health Invest ment Today (PHIT) Act, which would allow Americans to use a por tion of pre-tax health savings accounts (HSAs) and flexible spending accounts (FSAs) toward qualified sports and fit ness purchases, like gym memberships, fitness equipment, and youth sports league fees. “Having spent a portion of my career working in the fitness industry, I know how important exercise is to physical, mental, and emotional health,” said Senator Perdue. “Today, physical inactivity is estimated to cost Ameri cans $117 billion each year. This is alarming, and it can be prevented. Help For Landowners Frustrated By Flightless Geese! Special to the Ledger The Canada goose lives in a variety of habitats, often in locations that are in close proximity to people, such as suburban neighbor hood ponds, office com plexes, parks, and other developed areas. This can become a frustration factor for landowners when geese begin to molt in the summer, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Wildlife Resources Divi sion (WRD). “Each summer, in late June and early July, complaints about geese tends to go up,” says WRD State Waterfowl Biologist Greg Balk- com. “This uptick in complaints goes hand- in-hand with the fact that geese go through a molting process in sum mer, during which they lose their flight feathers and are in the process of growing new ones.” What can you do if you have goose prob lems? During most times of the year, geese can be scared away with the use of harassment techniques. But, because geese cannot fly during the molt, these tech niques may not work. During the molting season, WRD personnel encourage affected land- owners and homeowners to be patient. The new feathers will soon grow in, and the geese will regain their ability to fly and will likely move on. However, if geese con tinue to cause problems, here are a few tips to try and reduce the trouble: • Harassment: Land- owners who don’t want geese on their property can first try a variety of harassment techniques, including chemical repel lents, mylar balloons, wire/string barriers, and noise makers. These methods are proven to help reduce goose problems. However, they require consistency from the property owner and are not always 100% effective. More infor mation can be found at www.georgiawildlife. com/nuisancewildlife (scroll down and click on “Canada Geese”). • Relocation or Lethal Methods: Homeown ers who want to reduce or eliminate the goose population on their property can obtain a permit from their local WRD Game Management of fice (www.georgiawild- life.com/about/contact). This permit allows them to have geese captured and relocated to a suit able area or allows them to legally and lethally remove the animals. The removal can be done by the homeowner or by a licensed nuisance wild life trapper (list found at www.georgiawildlife. com/nuisancewildlife). It is important to remember that Canada geese are a protected species under state and federal law. It is illegal to hunt, kill, sell, purchase or possess Canada geese except according to Georgia’s migratory bird regulations. For more information, visit www.georgiawild- life.com/nuisancewild- life. This is a good, bipartisan step toward preventing chronic diseases and ultimately getting at the real drivers of spiraling health care costs.” “I applaud Senator Perdue for his leader ship on bringing down long term health costs by encouraging Americans to live active, healthy lifestyles,” said Herschel Walker, a member of President Trump’s Coun cil on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition. “Providing for the health of our children’s future is one of the best investments Congress can make,” said Wayne B. Moss, Executive Director of the National Council of Youth Sports. “For many youth, the cost of participating in sports can be just out of range for their families’ budget. Giving Americans the opportu nity to use their Health Saving Accounts will help eliminate barri ers to participation and increase the number of young people par ticipating in organized sports. In addition to the physical benefits sports provide, the research shows sports increases academic performance and self-esteem while re ducing risky behaviors.” Qualified expenses do not include: private clubs owned and operated by members, or clubs with golf, hunting, sailing, or riding facilities. In the case of sports equip ment (other than exercise equipment), reimburse ment for a single item cannot exceed $250, and these pre-tax dol lars cannot be used for general fitness apparel or footwear. The PHIT Act is cosponsored by Sena tors John Thune (R-SD), Chris Murphy (D-CT), John Barrasso (R-WY), John Boozman (R-AR), Shelley Moore Capito (R-WV), Kevin Cramer (R-ND), Johnny Isakson (R-GA), Angus King (I-ME), Gary Peters (D-MI), Mike Rounds (R-SD), Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ), and Roger Wicker (R-MS).
