A Key By Charles Harris Pastor, Beattie Road Church of Christ Early in His ministry, Jesus made this bold declara tion: “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven” (Mat thew 7:21). Think about each element of this verse and the two verses that follow. There is nothing more important or essential for us than to “enter the kingdom of heaven.” Jesus first tells us who BY CAREY KINSOLVING AND FRIENDS Can I Be Sure God Is With Me? “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever” (Psalm 23:6). “The verse means that God will dwell with me all my life,” says Devon, age 10. “It also means that God will stay with me in my house.” Devon, God stays at my house, too. But as King David recalled his days as a shepherd boy, I think he had something greater in mind. First, let’s consider Bible , From page and all the days of the elders that overlived Joshua, and which had known all the works of the LORD, that he had done for Israel. And the bones of Joseph, which the children of Israel brought up out of Egypt, buried they in Shechem, in a parcel of ground which Jacob bought of the sons of Hamor the father of Shechem for an hundred pieces of silver: and it became the in- Verse will not enter the king dom of heaven. It is not enough to say to Jesus, “Lord, Lord.” What did He mean by that? Look at the next verse (Mat thew 7:22), as Jesus looks ahead to the day of judgment: “Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?”’ Here are persons who, like Jesus discussed in verse 21, call to Him as Lord, and they itemize for Jesus some things that they have done for what Collin, 6, says about being shadowed by good ness and mercy: “God will follow us wherever we go.” Do you ever sense that someone is following you? Sheep always have this sense because sheep dogs constantly follow them. Dogs keep sheep from straying and ward off predators with their loud barking. After Francis Thomp son read this psalm, he wrote his celebrated poem, “The Hound of Heaven.” Like a faithful sheepdog, God pursues us with his love. Some let God catch them, and oth ers just keep running. At times, our aware- heritance of the children of Joseph. And Eleazar the son of Aaron died; and they buried him in a hill that pertained to Phinehas his son, which was given him in mount Ephraim. from Joshua 24 For a free Scripture packet, please write From the Bible, BIBLE FOUNDATION, PO Box 908, Newberg, Or egon 97132. email: bf@ bf.org Him in His name. Think for a moment, how impressive the ac tions are that are men tioned in verse 22: proph esied, cast out demons, done many wonders. They are very impressive things to be able to do for the Lord in His name. And, notice how sincere ly these people thought that what they were do ing was right, acceptable, and even commendable by the Lord. Was there something wrong with what they were doing? It all sounds good and looks good. Jesus’ stern rebuke and condemnation in verse 23 is compelling. To these individuals who just claimed to have done all of these great things for the Lord in His name, Jesus pronounces: “And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!”’ ness of God’s pursuit and presence is more acute, says Jordan, 11: “Sometimes when I am scared, like when I have to go outside in the dark, I pray. And I feel God with me. He’s there. I know He is because after I pray, I don’t feel as scared anymore.” We have a natural ten dency to fear and worry because we sense that many things in our lives are beyond our control. A simple trip to the grocery store could result in a fatal car accident. Sheep under the care of a good shepherd don’t always have to know “Why?” They can rest in the care of the shepherd. Under the care of a wise shepherd, sheep graze To a group of sincere believers and followers, who just declared their allegiance to Him and doing deeds in His name, Jesus announced: (1) “I never knew you”; (2) “Depart from Me”; (3) “You practice lawless ness!” Their activities for Him were lawless. Jesus had warned in verse 21 that, “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,” shall enter the kingdom of heaven.” Then, He gave a clear illustration that He is dead-serious about this warning; He will not hesitate to condemn for all eternity even those who sincerely claim to follow Him. Let’s go back up to verse 21. Jesus also makes it very clear who shall enter the kingdom of heaven—it is “he who does the will of My Father in heaven.” That is a very limited number on weeds and naturally fertilize barren, scrubby areas so that they become lush pastures. Similarly, those who receive God’s grace transform bar ren deserts into fields of goodness and mercy. Now, we come back to the house, as in “I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” Brook, 10, says, “This means to be dwelling under the love of the Lord.” “The house of the Lord” is not a physi cal building. Solomon’s temple didn’t exist when David wrote this psalm and has long since been destroyed. Originally, the word “church” meant a gathering of Christians, not a building of stained glass and pews. Early Christians met in homes, under trees in open fields and even underground in of people (see Matthew 13-14). Jesus said that there are only a few who would do the will of the Father and enter the narrow gate of heaven. In Matthew 7, Jesus both limits and specifies the ones who will go to heaven. Are you in that number? Are you doing the will of the Father in heaven? Jesus came to earth in the first century, and He will come again at the end of time. Scripture teaches us to prepare for His second coming. He’s coming to save those who believe. “Without faith,” Hebrews 11:6 says, “it is impossible to please God.” If we love God, we want to please Him by placing our trust in Him. Faith, however, is not all that’s necessary to please Him. We also must turn away from sin in repen tance and turn to Him in obedience (Acts 17:30; catacombs when hiding from Roman soldiers. Adrianna, 8, explains it this way: “We will live in his kingdom forever.” Amazingly, Adrianna has captured the sense of dwelling in the Lord’s house. It’s in the same sense that we say the House of Windsor or the House of Stuart. It doesn’t refer to a literal house but to a royal fam ily or kingdom. Just as the sheep belong to the shepherd’s house, God’s people belong to the house or kingdom of the Lord Jesus. As with every royal house, one must be born into it. Jesus told a Jew ish ruler that he couldn’t even see God’s kingdom unless he was born by God’s Spirit. Today, God dwells in living temples — in the hearts of people Mark 16:16; Hebrews 5:8-9). Loving God means loving what is right and leaving what is wrong. With love, faith, and repentance, we also need to confess Jesus Christ is God’s Son and be baptized into Christ (Acts 2:38; 8:37; 22:16). When we’re baptized, God washes away our sins with the blood of Jesus. He frees us from sin, makes us His chil dren, and adds us to His church (Acts 2:47).
