I have a friend who is very irresponsible with his money, and he often asks to “borrow” cash between paychecks. I don’t want to be cruel, but things are getting out ofhand with his requests for money. James Dear James, I think you should tell your friend the truth. Let him know you’ve decided to get control of your money, you’re trying to get out of debt, and you simply don’t have cash to spare. Be sure to do it with a kind spirit, but sometimes you’ve got to look at the big pic ture in these situations. You’re not really helping someone if you partici pate in their misbehavior and enable bad habits. Sometimes, you have to love someone enough to tell them no. Let your friend know how hard you’re work ing to get your finances in order, and how it’s making a big difference in your life. Maybe you could offer to show him the steps you’ve taken so far, and let him know he could be successful do ing this, too. You might even try to show him how to make a monthly budget, and act as his guide and accountability partner if he’s willing to accept this kind of help. In some cases, helping someone means offer ing what you know they need instead of what they want. But you’re never really help ing some one who’s incompetent with money by simply handing them cash. Good luck, James! —Dave (The per fect time?) Dear Dave, My wife and I are both 46, and we have two teenagers in middle school. We were told recently that now is the perfect time for us to buy long-term care insurance. How do you feel about this in our situation? Thomas Dear Thomas, No, now is not the per fect time for you guys to buy long-term care in surance. Research shows there’s about a one percent chance of folks your age needing long term care insurance, and I generally don’t recom- See Dave, page 3C Dave Ramsey Counseling Corner You Do Deserve The Success You’ve Earned Special to the Ledger from the American Counseling Association It’s a feeling that affects both men and women. You’ve achieved success at work, with a community organiza tion, or just within your family, and yet you don’t feel you’ve really earned that achievement. You may think that your accomplishments come from luck or good timing rather than any real talent and hard work on your part. You may feel like a fraud, not re ally capable of the tasks facing you. Having these thoughts is fairly common. They’re manifestations of self-doubt and a lack of self-confidence, and there’s even a psycho logical term to describe them — “imposter syn drome.” It’s not a psychologi cal disorder but rather a descriptive name devel oped in the late 1970s. Researchers and clini cians found that they were seeing people who had strong accomplish ments yet were often convinced they didn’t deserve the success they had won. It happens to many of us. We may have trouble believing we are as in telligent and talented as we really are. The result can be our crediting outside reasons or forces as to why a good thing is occurring, rather than accepting that we actually made it happen ourselves. Such feelings can become a problem when feeling like an impostor gets in the way of our daily lives. We might be afraid or even frozen when facing a work presentation or speech at a big meeting. We may question or avoid the de cisions we need to make regarding our children and family. Professional counselors report that they have seen this self questioning and lack of confidence in everyone from managers of large businesses to stay-at- home moms. However, there are ways to overcome impostor syndrome. A starting point is to step back and look objective ly at your accomplish ments. Make a list of positive things, big and small, you’ve accom plished in the past year. Then own those accom plishments. Give your self credit for the work and talent that achieved those successes. see Corner, page 3C 5 simple breakfast hacks for a hassle-free morning (BPT) - Weekday mornings can be rough, trying to get yourself and your family up and dressed, fed, then out the door in time for school and work. It’s tough to make sure everyone gets something healthy to eat before dashing out to start the day. What if there were a few simple things you could do to make your morning rou tine run more smoothly, all while making deli cious breakfast choices? Try these breakfast hacks to help simplify your morning and nour ish everyone at the same time. Prep for the morning before going to bed. Have everyone choose and set out their next-day outfits the night before, to avoid last-minute closet and laundry room scrambles. Then pro gram your coffee maker. It sounds simple, but how many of us actually do this? Most coffee makers can be preset to start at a certain time in the morning. Even the most basic coffee maker can be fitted with a filter and prefilled with grounds and water, ready to go when you wake up. This way at least the adults in the household will be fully awake. Make a blender smoothie the night be fore. Want to be sure the kids drink some milk and get a little fruit in their breakfast? The night before, blend milk and/or yogurt with the kids’ favorite fruits or fruit juice. Include some ripe berries or bananas and add a little honey or agave for sweetness, if needed. Store in the fridge and give it a quick mix in the morning to be see Breakfast, page 3C 1 N i V N O >i 1 3 N i d y V M d V A V M y 3 1 V ■ L n d V 3 A V T d n d 3 1 i s V 1 i i N V » i V 3 s o d | s S 3 N s n 1 3 1 V y V 1 1 1 3 3 I/M H i H 0 d IAI V 1 y 3 d V o a o 1 Happy Birthday To: July 11: Mary Evelyn King, Marcia Studley, Shelby Everett, Brooke Cannon, Edna Jones, Phil lip Bridges, Shane White, Stephanie Pate Roberts, Payge Carswell, Cheryll Lamkin, April Walls; July 12: Christian Maleski, Noah Balazs, Erin Thaggard, J.K.
