At the Freshman Con vocation held August 18, each student was given a silver coin by GSW President Dr. Neal Weaver to signify the beginning of their GSW journey. Upon gradu ation, they’ll receive a gold coin in its place, giving the silver coin to someone who made a difference for them during their time at GSW. The Class of 2023 is the first class to bring in more than 200 students with the new Southwestern Promise scholarship available to Georgia freshmen. The scholarship program, established in Hurricane Michael’s aftermath, Special to the Ledger After a summer break that was filled with seven art camps, two popu lar monthly events for children and students are returning to the Albany Museum of Art in Sep tember. Toddler Takeover, which begins at 10:30 am, starts its new season on Tuesday, Sept 3, 2019. That program aimed at youngsters 15 months to 3 years old takes place on the first Tuesday of the month. Homeschool Day, geared toward homes- chooled students in K-5th grade, will return on Thursday, Sept 12, 2019. It is conducted on the second Thursday of the month. Each month has a theme that is coordinated with exhibitions on view in the AMA galleries. “We expect to have great participation again,” said Annie Vanoteghem, director of education and public programming for the AMA. “We take a summer break because of our heavy schedule of art camps and the fact that families travel a good deal in the summer months. “Now, fall is just around the corner and school is back in session, so we’re excited to offer these engaging educational programs to homeschool students and our young est museum guests.” At Toddler Takeover, children visit a gallery, do an art project and have story time. Programming for Homeschool Day empha sizes STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) curriculum. “It’s an excellent way for young people to get exposed to art and learn while having fun,” Vano teghem said. Toddler Takeover is free to AMA members and $5 for non-members. While it is aimed at toddlers, the program is family-friend ly, so siblings are wel come to come as well. automatically guaran teed scholarships of either $1,000 or $2,000 to beginning freshmen who live in a 56-coun ty region of Southwest Georgia.
