As a concerned resident of Lee County, it is time to evaluate the performance of some local and state elected officials. Numerous people have expressed their discontent of never being able to reach those officials. Pray for those in the path of Hurricane Dorian. A man who knows said the Trojans this year are even better than last year. Friday night's performance confirms they are good. The commissioners made an employment deci sion. Let's move on. A Historical Marker is a good tribute to the young girls that suffered a great injustice years ago. I am impressed when reading about Lee Coun ty High School Distinguished Alumni. Hunters do not especially need semi-auto so called "weapons of war" but America's founding fathers did not give citizens the 2nd amendment because the deer were coming. The 2nd allows armed American citizens to prevent genocide by their own government as has occurred in un armed countries and to prevent foreign invasion. Over the years, how many people thought their road was on the paving list? How much is it going to cost the taxpayers to change out the voting machines and how long before they will be challenged - that probably depends on the loser in the next election. As we look at the number of blue tarps on houses, let us be thankful as we watch the path of the hurricane. Transparency is needed on the hospital, roads and recreation. Deaths caused by motorists running red lights are the highest in ten years according to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety. More than two people are killed every day in the United States because of impatient or careless drivers' traffic light violations. Every shooting people blame the gun, want stiffer laws or banned them. This will not solve the problem! It's time for parents to be par ents again. 90 percent of the gun violence is by younger individuals. A lot of kids have no clue what the golden rules are, nor taught to re spect, let alone the value of life! Young people are not taught to solve problems peacefully by talking, or if ya get a broken heart there's more fish in the sea, they're not taught that it's OK for people to have different opin ions. We must change the mind set of our youth. Well if you can't get a hospital or development in the GI area, do we need another road to help Oakland? Not a lot of economic development out of houses these days. And the 'big box' stores haven't shown up. Our country has been taken a way by the politi cians and the courts. Trojan softball girls tearing them up. Go girls! Those not supporting the 2nd Amendment don't realize a largely unspoken intent is to pro tect people from their government. If you don't see it now with all that's going on, you never will. If the life cycle of artificial turf on a foot ball field is 5 to 10 years, how long is it before replacement time? What do we do when violence is the preferred choice of settling an argument is some cultures, how do we change it? Isakson stepping down is a good move. Maybe he will inspire Ginsberg to do the same before she dies on the bench. NRA has too much power Another mass shooting. What will it take for our elected officials to take meaningful actions to address this epidemic? According to an FBI Field Officer, on average a mass shooting (four or more victims) occurs in the United States every two weeks. Although a majority of Americans want reasonable gun controls, the National Rifle Association (NRA) has a powerful influence on the administration and Congress. The NRA, which was founded for the purpose of promot ing gun safety, has now morphed into full time lobbyist for gun manu facturers. It has pushed out Oliver North as president, allowed itself to be infiltrated at the highest level by a female Russian operative, made questionable expendi tures and appears to wel come conflict between religions, races and even nations if that will sell more guns. Congress should do what it can to improve mental health, background checks, etc., but if it is really serious it will do something about assault rifles and high capacity magazines. Let’s see who prevails, the American majority public or the NRA. Robert A.
